How Can You Survive Without Money

In our modern times, with the internet and twitter we do have a known person who can live without money. He lives, well he resides, in a hidden cave, high in the canyon about 60 minutes by foot in Moab, Utah. His name is Daniel Suelo. He is obviously not your typical American who has heaps of debt on their credit card accounts. struggling with their home loan, anxious and stressed about their office job, not to mention the current economic crisis. It has been over nine years from the fall of the new millenium, that Suelo chose to not use money anymore.

Suelo does keep a blog, which he updates free from the Moab Public Library. He basically wrote that money is a symbol of the past and future. It does not define what is present. I kind of disagree with that since you can still purchase so-called necessities that I think are required for everyday life. It is interesting he lives this way in a capitalistic society.

Could you do this yourself? It is truly a remarkable achievement to re-invent yourself this way.

There are more details of Daniel Suelo's journey that can be read here. It is from life's experiences that can make one turn 180 degrees or shift just a few degrees to not be bound by the limitations and restrictions that money or something places on your life. After all we are in the country of freedom.

You cannot tell me you do not feel great when your credit card(s) has a zero balance. Mainly due in part to having no debt. Living without debt is not a sign of fear of responsibility. In fact, it can be said to being very responsible, more knowledgeable, and wiser than the herd mentality. The goal of most entrepreneurs is to work less, make more and retire early. The goal of Mr. Suelo is to retire early whilst not needing money to do so. However, I do think that once age sets in his health needs may change his mind as lives in the elements of the environment. Although, I could be wrong about this. I would feel a lot better about his chances if he had livestock nearby.

I am sure you have read or heard about some unemployed real estate professionals who lost their home and live in trailer parks, live in their own cars an take showers where they can find it due to "too much debt". So, while Daniel Suelo lives like he does you may know other former professional people who had to take a different path of life. They just rolled with it. Could you?

Survival without money may become commonplace very soon for many people. Bartering will take the place of money somewhat. Crime will rise massively first though. The strong will survive. Good hub....thanks!

Thanks for sharing this. Daniel must be a remarkable person and I'm going to follow up on that link you have provided.

I think, like Tom above, that we are all going to have to learn to live in a money-free way in the future. And maybe Daniel is pointing us in a creative and useful direction.

Thanks for starting a thought process for me.

Love and peace

Tony

I have heard of this person but now have a better understanding of who he is, I do not know if I could live without water but I do know that I could live without electricity. A person really has to change there mental state of mind to live at the capacity that this gentleman does and I commend him for taking on the challenge and still living the way he does. All of us depend on money way to much , many of us should move it down a notch and realize that it is not the materialistic things that we should seek but we should seek what is above. What a wonderful hub you truly kept me thinking. :)

I've been making a concerted effort to lower my expenses as much as possible over the past year and half or so. I think if you weren't already tied down with a mortgage and car payment and especially if you had some like-minded people involved you could get very close to the point where you could live without money without going the cave dweller route.

If you can live in a car or some unfortunate people live on the stree, why not a cave? The benefits are more privacy. recent news about 2 brothers in eastern Europe who did it and inherited a fortune; in the multi-millions. Yes, their lives will change. One of them wants to get married now.
