This is my dog Lizzie. She is my first dog, but not my first pet. Having a pet is a rewarding, challenging, and loving experience. Everyone loves their pets, but I have to say my dog is the best. I am not planning on having a family of my own. My husband and my dog are all I have and all I want. Lizzie, my one-year-old Rottweiler, is a one of a kind creature. She is not only loving and loyal, she is funny, smart, and friendly too. I have never met a dog before that does what she can do. I am grateful everyday that I have such a wonder creature in my life. She can certainly be a handful, but it is completely worth it.

Rottweilers are not what you think.

Rottweilers are usually stereotyped. People seem to think that they are vicious attack dogs. There are some that are trained to be attack dogs, and wild Rottweilers are probably that way, but most are loving, caring, loyal, friendly, and playful. My Rottweiler has never attacked anyone. She won’t even bark in public unless I make her. She is very loyal and I can tell she loves me. Lizzie loves people and always wants to go up to them and lick them (give them kisses). She does not realize most people are afraid of her. When she was little, strangers would walk up to us and ask to pet her. That does not happen anymore. Lizzie is about 80 pounds now and stands to the middle of my thigh. The following is a glimpse of the true nature of a Rottweiler.

She always makes me laugh.

Lizzie is always doing something funny. The other day, my husband and I were making her speak and growl. We would say “Mama” and make her try to repeat it. The funny part was that she did! She can say mama and “Rut-ro” like Scooby Doo!

Lizzie loves it when I come home. She starts running around in circles and tries to wag her tail, which she doesn’t have. She instantly makes me happy when I walk through the door, no matter how bad my day was.

The Big Scray Rottweiler!

I cannot stay mad at her.

Lizzie was not very easy to housebreak. But no matter how many times she had an accident in the house, I could not stay mad at her. I would discipline her to make her learn that it was bad, but I would always make it up to her. After about 5 minutes, I would go to her and pet and/or play with her to let her know I still loved her.

Lizzie has recently developed a liking for getting into the trash. I have two trashcans in my kitchen. One is for regular, everyday trash. The other one has a lid on it in order to keep Lizzie out and bad smells in. Well, my husband is a bit lazy and does not always want to take the time to lift the lid to throw the garbage in. Needless to say, Lizzie has learned that she is now tall enough to simply reach her head inside the open bin and take out what she wants. One day I came home to find the floor littered with bits of paper towel and newspaper. There were also coffee grounds and other food items spread around the kitchen floor. First, I got a rush of anger, then sadness because I had to clean it up, then my eyes met Lizzie’s. She looked so sad and apologetic that I could not stay mad a moment longer. It took a great effort for me to tell her that she was a bad girl and to hit her nose with the biggest piece of newspaper I could find. As soon as I finished cleaning the mess up, I went to Lizzie and gave her a hug and pet her.

Here is another example. A few months ago, my parents moved from one end of the town they lived in to the opposite, and further away end. Instead of taking 15 minutes to get to their house, it now takes me 30. A few weeks ago, I decided it was time to bring Lizzie to my parent’s house to show her off now that she is almost full-grown. About 3 minutes before we got to the driveway, Lizzie became car sick in the backseat. I knew that she did not like the car, but she had never actually gotten sick before. I let out an “Oh Lizzie! No!” but it was too late. We pulled into the driveway and she jumped out of the car. I apprehensively took a look in the backseat. It was not a pretty site. We walked into the house where I knew they had something to help with the mess. I was not mad at Lizzie though. I knew that it was not her fault and she looked so sorry. I knew that she must have disliked it as much as I had. I even felt sorry for her, because of her discomfort. Lizzie made up for it on the way home. She had to sit in the front seat. I had to comfort her all the way home. She laid her head on me and I had to constantly talk to her in order for her to stay calm and not get carsick again. I know other people might have been angry, like my sister was when I was sick when I was young, but I knew Lizzie did not want to be sick as much as I didn’t want her to be sick. I can’t stay mad at my Puppy.

She is an endless source of entertainment.

Lizzie does the cutest things! Last night, my husband and I were getting ready to go to sleep. We got in bed and pulled the covers up. Lizzie was not sleepy though. My husband decided to play with her for a few minutes to let out her energy. He put his hand under the blanket and moved it around. Lizzie thought that was the greatest thing ever. She jumped onto the bed and pretended to attack his hand. A few minutes later, she accidentally pulled the blanket off his hand. Here is the really funny, amusing part: Instead of playing with his hand or finding another toy, she picked up the blanket with her mouth and put it over his hand so it was covered up again! It’s the little things like that that she does all the time that makes her an endless source of entertainment.

Lizzie has a very unique way of jumping to get a branch in a tree. It reminds me of the way cartoon characters run. First they do it in place, then that off really fast. Lizzie does a few quick and low jumps and then really jumps. Watch the 1min video to see her in action.
