Llamas and Llama Trekking

What are Llamas?
Llamas are camelids, the biological family which also includes the Dromedary and Bactrian camel, the alpaca, vicuna and guanaco. Llamas originated in North America and migrated to South America and Asia, where they became domesticated.
Llamas are intelligent, gentle animals and they can carry up to 30% of their own body weight. They are used as pack animals to carry heavy loads, but are not strong enough to carry people (except perhaps small children, if trained to do so). They also produce fiber which can be spun into soft, warm yarn to make clothing, crafts and rugs.
Llamas are quite hardy animals. They live in herds or can be kept in small groups, but they do not like being alone. Llamas are fairly easy to look after, friendly and good with children. This has made them very popular to keep as pets on a farm, or to provide a draw for tourists.
Llama Trekking
Llamas are becoming more and more popular around the world. If you would like to find out more about llamas and would enjoy an outdoor activity, then why not try llama trekking?
Most venues offer half or full day treks, often including a picnic. The llamas can carry all the food and equipment - even foldable chairs and tables so that you can eat in comfort. You will be able to groom and lead the llamas, but you will have to do the walking yourself. A few llama centres will allow tiny children to ride on a llama, but do check first, as most are not trained or equipped for this.
A llama trek is a wonderful experience, ideal for a family outing or a special occasion such as Valentine's Day, a birthday or wedding anniversary. But be warned; llamas are addictive. You may not want to say goodbye to them at the end of the trek!

I don't remember the Monty Python llama sketch - I found it by accident. Thanks for suggesting this topic for me chabrenas...it was on my list of hubs to write but your request made me get on with it!
I went onto your site out of curiousity about the games but became fascinated by the Llama Trekking. I had no idea that the UK has such a hot bed cottage industry of Llamas.
Why isnt there a Llama Trekking centre in the Lake District? First people to establish Llama Trekking there will reap many, many minutes of television publicity
Well, Lester, I think there is a Lake District llama trekking place! Check out their site:
Thank you for mentioning my site, Caspar! (I'm Les Fragnes Llamas in France.) Your article is great and really sums up what trekking is about. And I totally agree about llamas being addictive. We started out with four and now have twelve! You definitely feel calmer with a llama (which translates into French as 'Le lama qui vous rend Zen').
Happy llama-ing.
