Locals Only: San Francisco's Best Pizza
69Damn Good Pizza
I know. When you think of San Francisco, you think of sourdough bread, burritos and Tracy des Jardin not a Pizza Pie.
While I won’t claim that SF ‘za can go toe to toe with the best New York slice, we’ve got some decent pies here in fog city.
Here are the top 5 in my opinion.
Best Pizza in the Mission: Delfina’s pizza in the mission is an awesome thin crust. Yeah you gotta wait for 2 hours to get a tiny pie, but that makes it all the more delicious when your emaciated self sits down for a slice. Located at 3621 18th street. 415-552-4055. If you manage to get a table, get an extra seat and invite me.
Best thin crust in the Fog: Pizzetta 121 is on 23rd Avenue and California has like 4 seats inside and 3 tables outside in the fog. They have heat lamps, but they told us that they were conserving energy when we went. Sweet. I’m conserving Hypothermia. Anyway, the crust is so thin it’s nearly paper, and they have daily special pizzas that capture the imagination. Call 415-379-9800.
Best no wait Pizza in the mission: Delfina’s line got you down and don’t feel like freezing your tuchus at pizzetta? Hit Pauline’s Pizza on the Valencia street and 14th.
Best Pizza in North Beach. I like Tomaso’s in Northbeach. Order a pizza with meat balls and they will cut meatballs in half and put them on the ‘za. Now you’re talking Tomasos. Awesome cheese, great crust, good sauce. Can we go now, please? Kearny and Broadway roughly.
Best Hearty man’s appetite Pizza. Ok- it ain’t San Francisco, but just a bart skip and a jump from SF is Zachary’s Pizza in Berkeley. Deep dish, swimming in amazing tomato sauce, if you wanna hook your bad self up with lycopine and yum, this is the joint. It’s 5801 College Avenue in Oakland, 1 block north of the Rockridge Bart station. It’s worth the trip, but consider walking your fat ass back to San Francisco to burn off their Chicago style love.
I'd love to hear other ideas- leave a comment.

I always felt that Marcello's on Castro did a better NY-style than Escape from NY Pizza.
I tried to order Delfina, but they don't deliver, so I went with Marcellos. It's pretty good pizza, but not great. What's the best for delivery?
I'm ordering Delfina's Pizza tonight. There's a different phone number than the one listed above. If you want to order Delifina's it' 415-437-6800.
There's another Zachary's at the top of Solano (Berk/Albany area), near the Noah's Bagels. Much easier to find parking there than on College, for all you East Bay folkses.
Also: Zachary's now does half-baked, for you to take home and have ready whenever you so please.
Who cares if it's "Chicago-Style" or not. ZACHARY'S FOREVER!!!
Tomaso's is my all time fav. I used to travel to Oakland for work and made a habit of taking the trek to SF on Bart, then the trolley up the hill and walked the rest of the way. Had to take the 17 block hike back (with a detour to the Cheesecake factory) to burn off the cheese, but it was well worth every calorie!

Nice calls, delfina pizza is great, but you left out golden boy which has to merit best in some category, not sure which (best pizza for a brief stop between broadway strip clubs?), and in my opinion Zachary's is ridiculously overrated (ask anyone not from California if that is great chicago style and they will laugh...). Also, there is Za in Russian Hill for NY style. Little Star is supposed to be legitimate chicago pizza but I haven't been there yet. Its on divisadero in the pan handle.
