The Band

Pure American Metal

Lamb of God has become synonymous with the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. With a fast, loud and brutal sound, Lamb of God has catapulted themselves to the forefront of modern metal, selling over 2 million records in the United States alone. Formed in 1994, the band was formerly named Burn the Priest, but changed the name to Lamb of God after being banned from playing certain venues due to the owners believing Burn the Priest was an “evil” name. The band has released five studio albums (not counting the self-titled Burn the Priest album) the most recent one being titled Wrath, released on February 28th, 2009.

Lamb of God features vocalist Randy Blythe, guitarists Willie Adler and Mark Morton, bassist John Campbell, and drummer Chris Adler. Sound-wise, Lamb of God is described as “pure American metal” and there isn’t much else to describe them as. Lamb of God shares qualities of the influential metal band Pantera, as they both use syncopated rhythms, double-kick drumming and double-picking frequently. Another connection Lamb of God shares with Pantera is that they both are influential heavy metal bands from the southern United States, along with Mastodon from Georgia. In this regard, Lamb of God could be fostering a tradition of great heavy metal out of the south. Who says the only thing out of the south is country music?

Lamb of God has toured with big names like Metallica, As I Lay Dying, Children of Bodom (these last two are currently supporting the band on their current No Fear Energy World Tour) and Mastodon. Later this year, the band will be heading to Europe to support Metallica again on the World Magnetic Tour.

The bands most recent album, Wrath, debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, selling about 68,000 copies in its first week of being available.

Lamb of God is famous for energetic live performances, heavily encouraging moshing. The band typically encourages the “Wall of Death” variety of mosh pit during their usual final song, “Black Label,” (the crowd separates into two sides with a large gap in the middle, and after a building intro and a loud count to four from Blythe, the two sides charge at one another) and circle pits in several songs.

Lamb of God’s critically acclaimed heavy metal assault has garnered them many fans and much respect from the metal community, and they show no signs of stopping.
