Quickcam Pro series from Logitech have taken a whole new perspective the masses saw webcams. The QuickCam Pro 9000 makes no exception. It is specifically designed for laptops. It features a two hinge stand which helps it to be placed on the desk, or on the top of a LCD screen or preferably to the notebook’s lid. The delivery of good images is one of the notable factors which separate this webcam from the competing products from Microsoft or Creative. RightLight technology has been properly utilized in the webcam and hence the cam is best suited for low light applications. Instead of including fancy features like surveillance by motion capture and time lapse, they have sticked to the original concept of basic webcams.

The technical specifications of the webcam are listed in here. It sports Carl Zeiss lens which is synagogues to better image quality. A 2 mega pixel sensor is also incorporated which makes the images true to life and the webcam supports a maximum resolution of 1600x1200. The device presented no hurdles when the author tried installing it on his notebook. The coupled QuickCam software makes installation a breeze. Mac fans are in for a disappointment, as the included software isn’t Mac OS compatible as of this writing. But the webcam is easily detected, the only gripe being that the different tweaking methods employed in the windows software cannot be done in here.

The software also includes an audio tune up wizard which helps in calibrating the volume of the mic and the speakers. Various parameters of the video such as brightness, color intensity, contrast, white balance can be easily controlled using different sliders. As mentioned earlier the proprietary RightLight technology can be enabled or disabled and leaving it enabled gives the optimum picture quality. There has been much hue and cry over various installations of the webcam with various users worldwide. The software launches automatically, this can be troublesome because it would hamper the usage of the webcam with softwares like Skype, which are commonly employed for voice/video conferences.

The awkwardness of the stand makes the webcam to droop in the forward direction. Also it seems that the webcam is oriented to either one of the sides. These two were the major limitations of the QuickCam series, but amazingly the same cannot be found in QuickCam 9000 series. The mic is conveniently placed on the right side and the lens can be found on the left side. A rubberized mat has also been provided, which ensures that the webcam stays put when held to a surface. The build quality of the webcam, the stand is all above par and can be rated as excellent.

Although auto focus isn’t mentioned anywhere or advertised like the competing products, this webcam indeed includes that feature. The microphone also has good response. Videos recorded by the webcam are in windows media player format. Face tracking feature is also a boon to many. A two year warranty also comes bundled with the webcam.
