Long Term Weight Loss

Quick weight loss and long term weight loss are not synonymous. In fact they are opposites. Those of you who are looking for a get thin quick scheme may end up disappointed in the end and this is why:

Habits

Quick weight loss usually means forcing you into some strange way of eating that cannot be maintained over the long run. This may come in the form of a liquid diet, a diet that has no carbohydrates, or even fasting with injections. None of these types of fast weight loss plans actually teach you the healthy eating habits required to maintain long term weight loss. When you have lost the desired amount of weight and need to begin eating every day foods again, you will not have developed the kind of knowledge required to stay thin. Nothing is more disappointing than gaining back what you worked so hard to take off!

Metabolism

Your body’s metabolism determines how fast and how much food energy it will burn to survive. It is a very delicate system and it takes very little to set it off one way or the other. If your body senses that its energy source has decreased (it is receiving less food than it needs) it will slow down in order to accommodate the change. If you choose to eat very little, or go on a fast, your metabolism will slow down, then, when you begin to eat normally again, it will take some time for your metabolism to catch back up again. This kind of “dieting” is actually quite harmful and will have you gaining more weight than your initial weight loss.

Your quest for instant weight loss gratification will actually make your goals of long term weight loss much more difficult to attain. You are actually sabotaging your health for a quick fix to a long term problem. You didn’t become overweight over night, so you shouldn’t try to get rid of it overnight either.

Eat a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables, take a multi-vitamin, and monitor your snacking. Stay away from the fad diets. They will only make matters worse in the end!

Be Realistic

Take your time, re-teach yourself to eat healthy and exercise and long term weight loss will be yours…eventually. But along the way you will learn a great deal about yourself, your body and your ability to stick with what is best for you!
