Looking back at Wrestlemania 25 Matches
66Setting the Stage for Wrestlemania 25...
Wrestlemania 25 was considered the "Silver Anniversary" of the WWE's annual "Super Bowl of Professional Wrestling". The event held in the large Reliant Stadium of Houston, Texas on April 5th, 2009 featured a full slate of Championship and grudge matches to entertain fans from the WWE Universe all around the world. Popular superstars who were showcased during the event were John Cena, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Rey Mysterio, Chris Jericho and Jeff Hardy. Also appearing at the event were several celebrities including Kid Rock, Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls and Mickey Rourke, the actor who starred in the film "The Wrestler". And of course we can't forget about the WWE Divas! Now let's take a look at some of the more interesting storylines and plot buildups which lead to the various matches as well as the end results of this 2009 WWE Pay-Per-View.
Chris Jericho vs. WWE Legends: Piper, Snuka & Steamboat
Originally this whole situation started as a result of actor Mickey Rourke making comments directed towards Chris Jericho on the red carpet at an awards show. Jericho picked up on Rourke's words and immediately the two got into a war of words, but Rourke (star of "The Wrestler) eventually backtracked. That wasn't good enough for Jericho and he continued to not only berate Rourke on the WWE Raw show, but he also started insulting WWE legends such as Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Roddy Piper and Superfly Jimmy Snuka. Jericho eventually called out Ric Flair who is officially retired, and Flair told Jericho that Piper, Steamboat and Snuka would battle him at Wrestlemania 25. Just a few weeks ahead of the event, Jericho erupted on Flair in the ring, beating him to a bloody pulp in and around the squared circle. At Wrestlemania 25, Jericho surprisingly was able to defeat Piper, Snuka, and after an impressive performance by Steamboat, all 3 men. Having won the match, Jericho made the mistake of taunting actor Mickey Rourke who was seated in the crowd. Rourke eventually got into the ring and connected on a knockout punch to send Jericho to the mat, giving Flair and the WWE Legends reason to celebrate.
Randy Orton vs. Triple H - WWE Title Match
There was plenty to fight about between these two competitors. Randy Orton had turned into the biggest heel on the WWE Raw roster, after he kicked WWE Chairman Vince McMahon in the head before the boss could say he was fired. In the weeks following that, Orton did the same to Shane McMahon, before putting his hands on Stephanie McMahon. This of course enraged the current WWE Champion Triple H into constantly coming after Orton. Orton, the winner of the 2009 Royal Rumble was allowed to choose the title he'd compete for at Wrestlemania. After a bit of an attempt to get out of fighting Triple H, he was incited by The Game into choosing his WWE Title to go after. At Wrestlemania 25 PPV, Triple H extracted the sweet revenge he had been seeking for weeks, savagely beating down Randy Orton in the ring and getting the pinfall victory to retain his WWE Title. For Triple H, he had gained some measure of satisfaction after the heinous attacks by Randy Orton against his wife and the McMahon family.
John Cena vs. Big Show vs. Edge - World Heavyweight Title Match
In an interesting storyline, Smackdown General Manager Vickie Guerrero (also the wife of the World Heavyweight Champ Edge), booked her husband and Big Show in a one-on-one title fight for Wrestlemania 25. The former champion, John Cena had a definite gripe over this in that he felt he deserved a rematch for his title. Vickie and Edge did everything they could to keep Cena out of the title picture, but one night on Raw Cena let the WWE Universe see some rather revealing security camera footage from backstage. The video showed a secret love affair going on between Big Show and Vickie, unknown by Edge. Originally, Cena let Vickie know he has this bit of evidence, and she included him in the contract signing for the title match at Wrestlemania 25. During the Pay-Per-View's Triple Threat match, John Cena was able to overcome what seemed like insurmountable odds when he did his finisher The Attitude Adjustment on both Big Show and Edge, then scored a winning pinfall to become the new champion.
Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker - Streak on the Line!
The legendary phenom known as "The Undertaker" has a pro-wrestling mystique and history unlike no other. The Undertaker was 16-0 all-time at Wrestlemanias, as he as the only undefeated superstar in the history of the Pay-Per-View, and also has the longest winning streak ever. The Heartbreak Kid, aka The Showstopper Shawn Michaels vowed to be the man to finally end that streak. For weeks, Michaels mocked the Undertaker during appearances, wearing all white to the ring and quoting scripture from the Bible about light. At the big Pay-Per-View, Michaels and Undertaker put their bodies on the line in what has been called the match of the event. Both men have been out of action for several months following the match due to the high level of risky moves they did, showing why this was arguably the best match of the show.
Wrestlemania 25 Hype
Also included in the Pay-Per-View were Rey Mysterio winning the
Intercontinental Title from JBL in record time, Matt Hardy defeating
his brother Jeff in a grudge match, and Santina Marella winning the
Miss Wrestlemania 25 Divas Battle Royal. Also, CM Punk won a grueling Money in the Bank Ladder match by knocking Kane off the ladder to retrieve a briefcase hanging high above the ring. That briefcase contained a WWE title shot for anytime, anyplace that CM Punk would choose to cash it in, giving Punk a great opportunity at WWE gold.
There may be some who argue that Wrestlemania 25 didn't live up to the hype of a big Silver Anniversary event like it should, while others will say it did just what it was supposed to. It provided several hours of intense and exciting pro-wrestling sports entertainment, comedy and all-out action for the fans who love watching it week in and out. It remains to be seen if WWE's Wrestlemania 26 Pay-Per-View can outdo the overall spectacle of its predecessor.
