Looking to switch careers?
54In this day and age, career paths are much shorter than they used to be decades ago. Years ago, you would graduate from high school, trade school or college, get a job at a plant or large corporation, and stay there for 30+ years until time for you to retire.
Today, the average length time that a person works for the same employer is about five years. In addition, statistics show that a large percentage of folks don't even stay on the same career path all of their working lives.
Over the past couple of years I have helped quite a few people establish a whole new career after working in the same field for 10, 15 and even 20 years.
Below are some tips that can help you with the transition if you are considering changing careers:
- Do your research: Be sure to research the field in which you'd like to work in. Find out what is typically required to enter into that field; this way, you can map out the steps you need to take (i.e. additional training or formal education)
- Map out a plan: Once you know what you have to do to get into that field, start to form your game plan - sign up for that training, go back to school if necessary, subscribe to periodicals and newsletters for professionals that work in that field. There is a wealth of information in this kind of written material.
- Join one or two associations or affiliate groups for the field: this will provide you with the opportunity to network with those who work in the field already - usually, as a member, you can join online communities or attend networking functions.
- Seek out opportunities for internships and volunteer work, as this will give you some exposure and enable you to gain some experience in the field; and finally....
- Hire a professional - my role in assisting others with the transition is to conduct a detailed interview, and document those skills and experiences of your past that directly tie in with the work you will be doing in your new role. Many times, these skills, etc. are hidden and not evident from looking at an individual's resume. Once this information is documented, I then add it to your resume in a way that ensures that it stands out, and I coach the candidate for the actual interview.
By taking these steps, you'll be on your way to that new career in no time!
