The Nintendo Wii

Nintendo Wii burns calories

A study to find out whether computer games could contribute to childrens daily exercise needs, carried out by researchers at the John Moores University in Liverpool, England, have discovered that playing games on the Nintendo Wii helps children burn calories.

The researchers discovered that regular use of The Nintendo Wii console could help children lose 27lb (12.25kg) a year, because the console forces players to make body movements to control the action on the screen, rather than just pushing a button like you would on a joystick controlled console, It was found that whilst playing the Nintendo Wii the subjects aged between 13 and 17 years old, had an increased heart rate thus energy expenditure increased to 156% above normal resting rates-which is similar to a 5 minute run, compared to a joystick console the Nintendo Wii uses double the energy to play.

That's great. Now the only challenge is to find one. They've been sold out everywhere for months!

Last weekend my wife and me tried out the Wii for the first time. And I can definitely tell you: You do lose weight - it is obvious: With all these movements, and all that sweating there is almost no difference to playing those games for real. I still remember my mom telling me video games were bad becasuse 'you just sit there and don't move'. Well, times have changed!

only some games force you to move, though

The new Wii Fit launches later this year and will bring a new level of interactive fitness and games. The product includes a balance board and a bundled Wii Fitness games and should boost sales even more.

I would rather be playing games on my wii than working out like some sort of weightwatchers. Don't get me wrong the wii fit will be massive, but just don't expect to get one inside the package like a stylus pen. No doubt they'll be pricey
