Lost Money

The ever-worsening US economy has a lot of Americans racking their brains this year trying to figure-out ways to get extra cash in their pockets. They skimp on food and luxuries and work extra hours in order to keep their head just above the ocean of bills. For these people, finding lost money would be a Godsend- more money to pay the credit card companies, the rent, or extra funds to buy school necessities for the kids. I'm not talking about lost money that belongs to someone else, but lost financial assets actually belonging to them like lost pension money, uncashed checks, forgotten savings accounts, lost postal money orders, etc.

In this age of double-jobs and dual-income households, its not easy for people to keep track of their finances and overlook the fact that they're missing money. There is a way to recover that lost money though. Chances are it's with the government- just sitting around waiting for their owners to do a claim. Now since it's in the government's hands, one would think it would be safe and sound- wrong.

The News Journal based in Willington, Delaware recently reported that the Delaware State Treasury lost money (around $1,000 worth) to crooked Finance Department employees. "It was very clever. The people involved knew how to do this in a way that was very hard to detect, without specific information," State Auditor R. Thomas Wagner Jr. said in an interview after the expose'. In another report on ABC News, an elderly man from San Diego was arrested for trying to claim over $50,000 worth of unclaimed property that wasn't his. 79 year old Marvin Bernard Gold faces 20 years if convicted.

This news stresses the urgency for everyone to do a lost money search in the individual state unclaimed property databases and check if their names are on the list of claimants. The billions of dollars worth of lost money with the government should be in the hands of their honest, hardworking owners and not in the loot bag of some over-aged swindler or government crook.
