Lots Of Reasons To Hate Facebook
84
Facebook, I absolutely fucking despise it, the whole idea of its existence is one which makes me feel sick to the stomach. The very mention of its name by somebody, anybody, first thing in the morning makes me want to puke on my Shreddies. It was great at first, a tool for getting in touch with old friends, until you become hooked and begin to despise it. But you know that you can't delete the bleeding thing because you would subsequently have 411 friends wondering why you have decided to cut them out of their lives, or you have three people that live 5000 miles away that would cost you £1/$1 a minute to phone. Much of my justification for hating Facebook focuses around its completely and utterly grotesque sell out, the rest of my reasons are listed on this thread.
Things I Hate About Facebook....
- Facebook is pretty much a self-inflicted privacy eradicator. Signing up on that little registration page so that you can see pictures of your distant relatives new baby seems innocent enough, how many of you realise that facebook then own every single piece of information that you ever upload/write on their site? I may as well put an advert on craigslist/gumtree giving people my address, leaving my door unlocked, and telling them when I will be on holiday.
- People 'poke' you. In real life I do not want people that I haven't seen for four years walking up to me and 'poking' me. This is in my opinion rather odd behaviour. Facebook would be a lot better if it had a 'Punch Me' button.
- It is now seen as acceptable for old people to join facebook. Having your grandmother adding you as a friend means that you can no longer post pictures of young people having 'fun', this in turn takes any sliver of fun that may existed on facebook firmly away. Great.
- Why do people insist on inviting you to a group over and over again until you 'accept'? You have been invited to join a group on 18th Century Steam Engines 'Reject Invitation', You have been invited to join a group on 18th Century Steam Engines 'Reject Invitation' You have been invited to join a group on 18th Century Steam Engines 'Reject Invitation'. Would those same people post you 28 letters inviting you to a wedding? or would they perhaps get the point? Facebook it seems has also legalised harassment.
- Why do people get upset when they do not feature on somebodies 'top friends'?, would this perhaps have something to do with either a). They do not actually like you enough or b) you spend so much time on facebook that you think your staying in touch with your friends, whilst they still have real life trips to the pub together?
- People that invite all 500 of their friends to a group because they "have lost their phone and need everybody's numbers", when they actually only had about 50 numbers on their phone and haven't called most of those for three years?
- Friends 'Suggestions', which always show about two dozen people that you are 100% certain you have never met in your life. I will continue to make my own friends in real life without your suggestions, but..... errrr..... thanks for the suggestion?
- The dozens of people that add you despite having not seen you for over 5 years, just because facebook 'Suggested' that they might know me?
- Notifications. You make one comment on one photo/status/wall post and you subsequently get 34 notifications telling you that other people have also commented. Fuck you facebook, I just wanted to say that the photo looked nice.
- The whole world knowing when you have a temporary tiff with your fiance, resulting in you becoming officially 'facebook single', then subsequently putting this back to 'engaged' two hours later..... only to have your droves of 'suggested friends' congratulating you on your engagement..... fuck you imaginary friends, I have been engaged for four years. Actually, this is a good indication that it has become time to remove some people from your friends list.
I can't compete with this dude......
But I can sell out with an Amazon advert....

had me laughing! and its all true. i use facebook for friends and family, i admit, but only because i live too far away to see them in person. for that reason, I appreciate it. but youre absolutely right on all you pointed out, had me giggling while reading. merci!
Funny Hub, I wrote something along these lines as well called "Let's Go Back to the Future." Check it out if you get a chance.
So funny! I resisted joining for a long time because I hate it, too, but I ultimately joined FB - get this - to play scrabble with some friends - really! I really didn't join to find out what so-and-so is eating for dinner or planning to watch on tv tonight - why the heck should I care?! I love scrabble, though!
@megs78, Adam B, Lily Rose - many thanks for checking out my hub, glad that you enjoyed it ;)
Excellent hub, Ryan. Thank you for sharing opinion regarding Facebook.

I love it!!! I hate facebook too...and it's something you can't live with and can't live without. I just deactivated my account!
I joined FB about a month ago. I reconnected with an old friend I had not seen in 20 years! It was awesome!
Then we had a giant fight. Vicious. I'm normally a peaceful kind of hippie, but for a day or so my wall said: FUCK RIGHT OFF.
Now the other dozen or so old friends I had reconnected with don't seem notice when I say hello.....
stupid facebook makes people do stupid things.
It did inspire me to write a hub about the topic though.
A few of the people who witnessed the gruesomeness did actually link up to it. Score!
Very funny and very true, but what would I do without my Farmtown?
This is hilarious and so true. I am on Facebook because I feel like I have to - have been instructed to by a writer - you are a product and Facebook is a great place to sell yourself and blah blah blah. I don't get the poking thing but I am poking everybody I can.
My son joined some kind of free united Ireland group and now has terrorist types trying to be his friends -people in sunglasses with odd head gear and frightening scowls.
"...odd headgear and frightening scowls" yes, and strange tatoos and bleary-eyed drunken pictures is why 'old' people attend to these places and then say "No" when daughter wants to go out with potential serial killer(s).. thanks Facebook and the other one Myspace!
Cheers for your comments everybody.
@gary77g - lol, point taken. It is tongue in cheek, a 'love-hate' relationship.
i agree.. totally! i feel the same. how annoying but addictive! perhaps i should follow China to block FB for my own sake.
I have a love/relationship w/ FB... they have those stupid avatar games like "farmtown" I have at 15 invites right now which I ignore ignore ignore ignore ignore...LOL
You say you hate facebok, but you are on twitter?
That seems a little bit contradictory.
@Dencer - Sense of humour failure perhaps? I can't see any contradiction there at all, they are completely different websites. I am however on facebook, that is hypocritical, what would you like me to say? I'm sorry for hating facebook?
I used to be a bit of a non-conformist and never liked to follow the crowd, actually I used to actively rebell agains thre crowd when I was a teenager. However after signing up on facebook I found myself playing the game of "keeping up with the Jones'" constantly updating my profile pic to show everyone how much fun I'm having, and keeping a close eye on my friends #, and making sure it grows constantly... Weirdd.
I have hated facebook ever since it became the device through which my marriage was almost destroyed. It was a forum through which I met someone from the UK who convinced me that he was in love with me and should leave my husband for him. When I realized I was unable to, the relationship went south, and now I'm left with a shattered marriage which I'm trying to rebuild and emotional issues, while he is divorcing his wife and shacking up with a younger woman now that he's free. Wish I had never joined facebook and had stayed in the real world where I never would have met this guy. FACEBOOK=HEARTACHE

That was great, had me laughing. I use Facebook to keep in touch with family, and play bejeweled. I turn down so many bloody requests for applications it's not funny anymore.
