Teen Suicide
74
Teen suicide has become a serious problem in our society these days which reaches across all social lines. There was once written a Greek inscription which say "to know thyself" and to know thyself is to be true to who you are. It's very difficult to know yourself nowadays when there are so many false images on television, music video, radio, and the Internet. Suicide among teens are a very serious issue in our country today. A few decades ago there was something exciting to be a teenager, you didn't have as much pressure as you do today. Don't get me wrong, there were pressures to deal with but not on the scale as we see in this generation. When you consider the rate of high school drop outs and teen pregnancy, it become clear that something is very wrong with our society. Our teens are the future.
The pressure that our young people have these days are huge in comparison with what previous generation endured. Its very hard for them to be who they are because they are told to be something they are not through media and society. All of the problems we face with teen pregnancy, dropouts, suicide, depression, alcoholism and drug use are only symptoms of the underlining issue. And that is younger people not knowing who they are. They can tell you about a famous artists,or a TV character and politician. But when it come to describing themselves, they give you an outline of the external. Usually teens want to be excepted by there friends from school and work. But when they don't feel loved or excepted they tend to turn towards a more destructive behavior or even thoughts of suicide.
On September 6, 2007, the C D C P reported that Suicide rate in American teens(female,10 to 24 years old) increased 8% (2003 to 2004), the largest jump in 15 years
Parents should be aware of the following signs of adolescents who may try to kill themselves:
- withdrawal from friends, family, and regular activities
- rebellious behavior, or running away
- unusual neglect of personal appearance
- marked personality change
- persistent boredom, difficulty concentrating, or a decline in the quality of schoolwork
- frequent complaints about physical symptoms, often related to emotions, such as stomachaches, headaches, fatigue, etc.
- loss of interest in pleasurable activities
- not tolerating praise or rewards
School-based youth suicide awareness programs have been developed to increase high-school students' awareness of the problem, provide knowledge about the behavioral characteristics of teens at risk, and describe available treatment or counseling resources.
Many people seam to forget that they were young at one time in their life, and it takes a great understanding of the youth today. Why act as if your surprised at what you see today? We must forget about what we want to see and start to focus on how to get them there. Its not easy and it will take allot of work, but with love, and kindness we can help them seek a better future.
We should always listen to them, and give them the type of support that they need. Because if they don't come to people that care about there best interest, they will go to others that will take advantage of their loneliness. They must learn that to be you is to be true, and never give up on being who you are. It is better to be hated for what you are than to be love for what you are not. Teen suicide is never the answer and never will be.
