Low Calorie Diets

Low calorie diets work on the simple principle that calories give us fuel for all the activities and functions our bodies undertake. Low calorie diets are based naturally on low calorie intake. You WON'T lose weight fast and keep it off by just eating low carb diets, low fat diets, or low calorie diets.

In fact, eating low calories is the worst thing that you can do to your body, since that will only slow down your body’s fat burning engine and ruin all chances of losing weight low calorie diets may allow a few pounds of weight loss for the first few days, but then after that all weight loss comes to a halt – known as a dieting plateau.

Very Low Calorie Diets are diet plans which are based on restricting calories to as little as 500 a day. The fact of the matter is that low calorie diets are actually one of the unhealthiest ways to lose weight for most people.

Did you know that you should never exercise while on one of the many low calorie diets?.

Low Calorie Diets DO NOT Work

A very low calorie diet is a doctor supervised diet that typically uses commercially prepared formulas to promote rapid weight loss in patients who are obese. VLCDs are designed to produce rapid weight loss at the start of a weight-loss program in patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 and significant comorbidities.

It is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in pounds by height in inches squared and multiplied by 703. Doctors must evaluate on a case-by-case basis the potential risks and benefits of rapid weight loss in older adults, as well as in patients who have significant medical problems or are on medications. Furthermore, doctors must monitor all VLCD patients regularly ideally every 2 weeks in the initial period of rapid weight loss to be sure patients are not experiencing serious side effects.

A VLCD may allow a patient who is moderately to extremely obese to lose about 3 to 5 pounds per week, for an average total weight loss of 44 pounds over 12 weeks. Studies have shown that following a diet of approximately 800 to 1,000 calories produces weight loss similar to that seen with VLCDs. For many years, before the Atkins diet and other low carbohydrate diets, reducing the intake of calories was the traditional way to lose weight.

Remember, You are the one who wants or needs to lose weight so, if you cheat, you are only cheating yourself. Second, if you come off the diet because you ate a forbidden bar of chocolate or doughnut, you certainly won't lose weight. Because you can eat almost anything you like as long as you don't exceed your calorie allowance, you can work out a diet that you would be happy to continue, with somewhat increased portions, when you reach your target weight. But after you’re done you cannot start eating like you did when you gained weight again. When used moderately, without trying to restrict a great amount of calories at once, low-calorie diets are among the healthiest ways of losing weight.

Eat healthy carbohydrates, limit your intake of refined flour and sugars and choose only whole grains such asbrown rice, oats and wheat pastas. Eat healthy low-fat protein such as egg whites, lean chicken or turkey or fish. A healthy diet should consist of approximately 60% complex carbohydrates, 25% protein, and 15% fat. The diet can be successful and people do lose weight, however once they have gone off this diet, they can easily put the weight back on if they don't have a plan which commits to a change of lifestyle and healthy eating with exercise.

Some people are extremely overweight or even morbidly obese where as others only 5 to 10 pounds over what their ideal weight should be. The fact is, most people still believe that overweight folks have a character flaw that makes them incapable of eating moderately. It is also believed that overweight people get that way because they don't have the gumption to get up and exercise like they should. Nobody wants to be overweight, and no parent wants to feed their kids in a way that will make them another statistic in the childhood obesity and diabetes epidemic.

Very Low Calorie Diets, when used under proper medical supervision, effectively produce significant short-term weight loss in patients who are moderately to extremely obese. In the long term, however, Very Low Calorie Diets DO NOT WORK and are no more effective than more modest dietary restrictions.
