Low Carb Dieting How To

One of the biggest and most controversial diets is the Low carb Diet.  Many people have a misconception about how to start as well as how it works. This is some basic information on low carb dieting.

When you begin the dieting you should initially sharply cut down the amount of carbohydrates that you normally consume. I began at 20 net carbs per day. Net Carbs are total Carbs minus the fiber equals net carbs. Once you have been on 20 net carbs per day, kicked all the carbohydrate cravings and feel confident that you are in control of your eating you should gradually reintroduce carbohydrates to your body. I say gradually for two reasonsone to indentify any food that may cause cravings and two because you dont want to over do it and gain back any weight lost.

In a little more detail- When begining you should be getting about 15 net carbs per day from vegetables. The common misconception of low carb is that you are constantly gorging on fat which is untrue. You do not want to only eat meat cheese and eggs. As a matter of fact although you may eat one to two eggs per day you should consider those good fats when low carb dieting.  You can use a site like fitday.com to track your information and food intake which will help. In the begining you should be getting between 60 and 70 percent fat per day, 20 to 30 percent protein, 10 to 15 percent carbohydrates. Fat sound high? Well it isnt when you body will be using fat as energy.

Why the low carb diet works-

Low carbing works because your body becomes a fat burning machine and so therefore in order to lose weight you must give it fat to use otherwise when you have burned all the fat you risk burning up muscle. This is another reason that you must get the correct amount of vegetables per day or it can be detrimental to your health and you risk malnutrition.  Now in reference to the fats you should be getting GOOD fats such as olive oil, butter, cream, avocado.

Some other things to keep in mind-

When begining you should only get up to 4 ounces of cheese per day, 3 ounces of cream, and 3 teaspoons of sweeteners like splenda per day.

Next time you go to the store look at a person’s grocery cart. People who are overweight have a ton of carbohydrates in their cart. Good article!
