Low Voltage Lighting has been used by commercial landscapers for over 80 years. Today more and more home owners are enjoying the benefits by installing these systems in their own landscaping projects.

Why?

Low voltage lights far surpass solar lights in illumination quality. Solar lights, though they may be energy saving, cannot create the strength of illumination this system provides.

They offer huge savings in comparison to a standard in line voltage light system (120 volt system). The energy conversion properties are not so much in the use of wattage as it is in the length of the bulbs life. An average low voltage bulb can last up to an amazing 10,000 hours!

Safer for children and pets by dramatically reducing the level of shock danger. 12 volts is not life threatening. When it comes to outdoor playing with pets and children the variables that add up to danger can never be fully predicted or prevented. Low voltage lighting will provide much piece of mind by knowing that a 12 volt shock is all that an accident will deliver.

Flexible design ability. There really is no limit to the number of lights or configuration that can be installed, as long as, additional transformers can be added.

Providing night time illumination for safe stepping. Nothing is worse then stumbling around in the evening trying to find the door. The courtesy of providing an illuminated path for night time guests is always appreciated.

They are bright enough to highlight architectural features. Why not enjoy your homes unique features day or night. A home exterior lite up can bring impressive night time sophistication to the home.

The adjustable dimmer switch allows for creative night time ambiance. An evening around the pool, wedding reception, or just a simple family barbeque can be light directed, by using the standard dimmer switches that come with the better quality low voltage light systems.

Easy to install and simple to maintain. A do it your-selfer will have no problem incorporating these lights into a landscaping project. And, because of ease of installation, hiring someone to do it for you will not be the most expensive project on the list.

Can be operated with a timer. During the day of course you won't need them. At night, you don't want to be bothered with having to turn them on. The convenience of a timer provides consistent energy savings and night time illumination without the fuss.

So, What exactly are low voltage lights?

The lights alone are useless without the 3 part package. These are...

...The transformer. The transformer is what makes low voltage lights earn their name. A simple transformer box plugs into an outdoor 112 volt outlet and then transforms that energy into a 12 volt power system.

...The Cable. An insulated copper wire cable is added to the transformer that is flexible, water proof, buriable, and comes in various lengths. Length of cable needed is determined by the number of lights desired and the maximum allowable wattage of the transformer. For example: If you have a 100 watt transformer, then you can either have 2 lamps at 50 watts each or 10 lamps at 10 watts each, or, any other variations not exceeding the 100 watt maximum.

...The Lamps. Low voltage lamps are halogen and come in watt sizes ranging from 4 to 50 watts each. Halogen simply assures you get more light per energy unit and, as stated above last much longer than florescent or incandescent bulbs.

The Overall Value

The ease of installation, safety properties, night time benefits and money saving affordability of low voltage lights will continue to be a popular choice of commercial contractors and home owners for years to come.

Lots of good information. I am a lighting designer and installer and have been doing this for some time now and have in the last year been using the 24 volt system, With this system you can eliminate a lot of power usage from the amperage draw, I equate the amperage to a leaking faucet. When you up the voltage slightly to 24 volts you actually drop the amp load and since the wire is rated in amps you can now fit more fixtures in a single line and still have less amp draw. You can look for me at michaelmcvey.com and look at some photos of the performance of 24 volts.

Thanks and keep spreading the word about lighting your doing a nice job.
