How To Increase Breast milk Supply
84Many women who breastfeed, at one point or another, have a problem with low breastmilk supply and look for or need a way to help increase their breast milk supply. So, start off by knowing you are not alone!
I breastfed my first son for 28 months! Now I am pregnant with our second son and plan on doing the same, maybe even longer this time. During the time I breastfed our oldest son, I had several different breastfeeding trials, but the only one I will be talking about now is low breast milk supply and some of the methods I tried that helped me to increase my breastmilk supply.
Mommy's Minute - Is Your Baby Getting Enough Breast Milk?
Low Breast Milk Supply?
The first thing to keep in mind when breastfeeding and the effect it has on your breastmilk supply is positioning/proper latch and the amount of time the baby is properly latched on and nursing. These two things can make all the world of a difference, most times, and are extremely important in helping to increase your low breastmilk supply. So, make sure the baby is latched on properly and sucking effectively! Also, be sure to feed on demand - as often as the baby needs (meaning you may become a human pacifier!). I cannot stress these two enough and if you've been educating yourself on breastfeeding, this is probably beginning to sound redundant.
Poor Latch Good Latch
However, in my case, and many other women's cases, positioning and feeding frequently or on demand doesn't always do the trick! (At least not as fast as we'd like) I did fine with my breastmilk supply for the first three months, and then all of a sudden, it seemed to me that I wasn't making enough milk and that my breastmilk supply was too low!
What did I do during that time to help increase my breastmilk supply?

Increase Liquid Intake
Well, first, I made sure I was drinking enough liquids. A lot of times you hear that it is best to drink water in order to increase your milk supply. Water is great - but you cam also consume other liquids like milk, juice (preferabky 100%), and other beverages. Drinking a lot of liquids, along with the two factors, positioning and time spent nursing, also makes a big difference in regards to the production of your breastmilk supply.
One way I increased my liquid intake was by adding a breastmilk supply tea to my diet.
There are many different breastmilk supply teas on the market. Most of them are pretty effective in helping to increase your breastmilk supply, however I found one I particularly liked better than others. I personally recommend an organic tea because it is healthier for you and baby. I also prefer one that tastes good warm or cold, so that you can vary it for personal reasons or climatic reasons.
Caloric Intake
In addition to proper latch and liquid intake, another way to help increase your breastmilk supply is to make sure you are consuming enouh calories. Unless your diet is very very poor, you should always make enough milk for baby - but, I noticed on days when I ate more or healthier, my body seemed to produce more milk.
Also, remember, your baby may be`going through a growth spurt, and it may seem like you are not making enough milk. If you just feed on demand, which, again, may be very often, your baby should be getting the nutrition he needs.
Pump
To help increase my breastmilk supply, I also pumped, or expressed breast milk after the baby finished nursing to make sure I had expressed all the milk from both breasts. I also pumped at times inbetween feeds and made sure I used good nursing bras that fit well. I didn't do this often or keep it up long as a method to increase my breastmilk supply. It took up a lot of my day, and I found using the tea to be less time consuming, although not as effective. According to some research I did, emptying your breasts, in this particular case by manually expressing my breastmilk, signaled the body to make more milk. I can't give you the specifics or scientifics to how this increases your breastmilk supply (feel free to research it). I just remember learning and thinking that the body is a wonderful mechanism and knows when to make more milk according to how long the baby nurses and how often!
So again, if you are having problems with low breastmilk supply, know that you are not alone. There are many other women who experience the same problem. It doesn't matter if you are a novice or veteran to nursing! Each child and situation is different and calls for different measures.
Most importantly, don't give up breastfeeding! The benefits to both you and baby outweigh the trials and discomforts in the long run (in my opinion anyway). If all else fails, just remember to allow your baby to nurse for as long and often as he or she desires. Enjoy the bonding time and don't stress too much about your breastmilk supply, especially if the baby is happy, healthy, and gaining weight!

Mama Milk: that's interesting. I've read about mothers who sell extra breastmilk. They actually have a project where you can donate your breastmilk
http://www.breastmilkproject.org/gi_liquidgold.php
I'm not sure if you're interested in going that route, but I thought I'd mention it...
I used a tea called Breastea from http://www.breastea.com when I was breastfeeding. It made a tremendous difference in how much breastmilk I could make. If you have low milk supply, you might want to try it out.
Can I get the tea in Walmart or some where else
@ Angela - Thanks for the recommendation, hadn't heard of that one yet.
@ luve n hate - usually you can only get the teas online. You can sometimes find them in health food stores also, jusk ask.
I was able to produce an average of 8-9 oz of breastmilk per pumping session(1-2x/day,everyday).From slacking off(pumping 1x every other day or 2,thinking I'd get more/session the longer I waited b/w pumpings)& not eating & drinking enough,I eventually depleted my supply w/in about 4 days to about 1 oz of milk/pumping & struggle 1/2 the time to get even 1/2 oz.What are the BEST teas or supplements I can take to increase my supply back to it's original amount,or close to,in the shortest time possible(if possible)?
I have done some researching myself & found that eating oatmeal, drinking plenty of fluids along with taking flaxseed, echinacea,& other supplements/herbs help w/ increasing milk production(about 2x the amount in a given amount of time-though I don't know the time period).Other things I have read that help with producing milk is plenty of rest, nipple stimulation & massaging the breast(a fun way for the hubby/boyfriend to get involved w/ brestfeeding-who says working on breastmilk production/feeding is the responsibility of the mother anyway?lol).Decreasing or even eliminating caffeine & sugar intake also helps.
I'm trying the oatmeal & increased fluid intake along with taking a breastfeeding supplement called EXPECTA LIPIL-available over the counter @ Walmart,Rite Aid,CVS,& other drug stores,& a prescribed prenatal vitamin called PRENATE DHA.So far it seems to help.
I'm giving some tips as well as looking for some help on this matter. Please send some tips if possible to my email, which should be hyperlinked.Thank you.
I don't see my email link in my post,so I'm putting it in this post just in case.

Again,thank you for your help/suggestions.
Hi Jade,
I didn't approve your comment with your email because I'm afraid you would get a lot of spam, but if you want me to I can. I will also email you this response though...
Unfortunately, I know this is probably not what you want to hear but the best way to increase your supply is to drink more liquids and pump a lot more! You noticed that your supply decreased when you started pumping less, right? You body thinks your weaning when you pump less so it starts making less milk and the only way to counter this is to pump more. Teas help, but they're not a cure all and your best method is to really just pump more. In the beginning you may even have to pump every half hour or hour, but as you continue to do it you'll notice your supply will increase and then you can start to spread it out a little more. I wouldn't suggest going longer than 3-4 hours MAX between sessions though once you do increase your supply. Or else you may find yourself back at square one again. And then of course make sure you are getting at least your 8 glasses of water a day, but you really need more while breastfeeding/pumping. And latch also matters, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue if you're pumping.
Oh yeah, you also will want to drain your breasts at each session so your body will think you need to make more milk (similar to a babies growth spurt, the body will know, ok, I need to make more milk because this is not enough).
As far as teas, I can recommend either of the 2: Milkmaid or Mothers Milk.
Hope all that helps and thanks for your comment!

If this product does not work for you, or you decide not to try this I have an alternative. I am a mother of two and am breastfeeding my second child. I produce too much breastmilk and I am willing to sell excess breastmilk to mothers that can not produce enough. If you are interested please contact me at mama_milk@yahoo.com
