63Here is a review of two of the leading low carb diets, Dr. Atkin’s New Diet Revolution and The South Beach Diet.
Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution by Robert C. Atkins M.D., is the updated version of previously published book, Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution.
The book has already sold 10 million copies and over 20 million people have already started this diet plan. The Atkins Center claimes to have successfully treated more than 25,000 patients and recently 60,000 people have been registered at the Atkins Center for Complimentary Medicine in New York City.
This diet consists of a series of dietary phases, which they recommend people follow to lose weight. The main diet plan is supplemented with additional diets, which are provided for people with high metabolic resistance or for the people who have food intolerances.
The aim of the Atkins diet is to provide people a lifetime nutritional diet,which will help them in three major ways:
1.Encouraging people to consume nutrition rich and unprocessed food.
Example: meat, fish, and birds.
2.Daily intake of "vita-nutrient" supplements, which are basically vitamins.
3.Avoiding intake of processed and refined carbohydrates
Example: sugar-rich foods, breads, pastas, cereals, and starchy vegetables.
The Atkins diet also focuses on exercises and regular tests, so that you can monitor the levels of cholesterol, insulin, blood pressure and triglycerides. This Diet is also assessed in terms of cardiovascular health, cancer, diabetes, hypoglycemia and other health issues.
This diet is based on a considerable amount of theoretical and medical information, which includes providing you with a lot of practical details and presented to you in the form of instructions, anecdotes, menus and a carbohydrate calculator.
According to Dr.Atkins the findings are made on sound evidence, observations, and a large amount of personal experience.
South Beach Diet
A second popular low carb diet is the South Beach Diet.The South Beach Diet claims to be a delicious, Doctor designed and Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss
Dr. Arthur Agatston who is a MD in the South Beach area of Miami developed ·South beach diet. He is also an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at University of Miami and has published over 100 scientific medical articles.
One thing that you need to know is that since this book was written,part of the diet has been changed. The main change to the diet has been regarding the diary and some of the common vegetables like carrots. But even those changes, some people think that the recipes for the diet are not consistent with the stated goals for the diet.
The book comes with a manual; the manual is very useful for a later phase, which helps to identify the types of vegetables and fruits which are not recommended. The manual does not make a distinction between phases 1 and 2, and it cannot be used without the original book or at least online description of the basic ideas of this diet plan.
This plan promotes healthy eating of good fats and carbohydrates through a series of 6 meals and snacks a day. They claim that following this diet enables you to balance blood glucose, insulin, cholesterol and other markers of coronary artery disease. This diet is designed to help pre-diabetes and / or heart disease, patients with high levels of triglycerides and bad carbohydrates and glucose levels. Weight loss that occurred as a side effect, but this is the reason for diet in the book.
Weight loss is obtained by completely avoiding sugars, which are rapidly absorbed contribute to a high glycemic index. It also removes manmade trans fatty acids and also saturated animal fats, but it says nothing about the exclusion of saturated fat. Following these guidelines, the diet claims that weight loss will occur automatically.
The diet encourages eating fish, eggs, chicken or turkey, ham, almost all vegetables and drinking lots of water. You can also eat a little of almost all fruits, nuts, low fat meats, whole grain bread, pasta and rice, and canola oil or a glass of red wine per day. But it avoids all products containing sugar, fruit juices, potatoes, refined cereals, large servings of beef, poultry and pork, butter and beer.

I have implemented the Atkins diet multiple times and it works. The negative side, just like any other diet, is if you don't stick with it the weight comes back quickly.
