Lower Back Pain Treatment
Lower back pain has been established to be the second most rated cause for loss in working days to the common cold. It is also rated very high in the list of reasons as to why people visit a doctor or the emergency department of a hospital. Low back pain is referred to as acute if it lasts for a period of less than a month and as chronic if it lasts for longer periods.
Statistics in the United States have it that 90% of people living in the North American continent have experienced lower back pain once in their adult life and 50% have had more that one attack of lower back pain.
It is a very surprising fact to note that in 85% of cases, no specific reason for the pain could be identified, despite complete medical investigation. Back pain comes in, or is described in many ways, such as:
- Lower back pain.
- Mid back pain.
- Upper back pain.
- Back pain with Sciatica.
Clinical experience has established that among identified causes for the common back pain, the most prevalent are:
- Nerve and Muscle Problems
- Degenerative Disc Disease
- Arthritis
The majority of people handle back pain by taking pain killers, and do nothing else.
The Healthy Back Institute has worked with thousands of people helping them find lower back pain relief, and in doing so has discovered these four mistakes made by all of them.
The Healthy Back Institute - Back Pain Basics
Mistake Number One: Persisting in doing what does not work.
People continue going to their doctor, chiropractor or
physiotherapist, week after week and month after mother for months on end even
though they have not experienced any improvement in their condition. In one
case study there was a patient who visited his chiropractor for 70 consecutive
by weekly visits even though he got no relief at all.
Constantly changing your health care provider is not highly
recommended but if after a period of three months of regular treatment one does
not find any improvement in their condition, they should consider making a
change.
In order to make sure that a proper diagnosis has been made and that there is proper care plan in place there should be a monthly evaluation of the treatment and the progress that has been made.
Mistake Number Two: Putting off dealing with pain when it first appears.
The nature of lower back pain is such that in most cases it always lasts for just a few days on its first appearance. Practically everyone have the tendency to forget about the pain once it disappears rather than make any serious efforts to find out what cause the pain.
In one case study a middle aged woman experienced her first bout of lower back pain when she suffered back spasms. The spasms and pain lasted for a few days and disappeared.
She decided to forget about it and carried on with her life.
The spasms and the pain returned two years later, but this time it was much worse, so bad that she could not do any work at all.
Had she investigated the pain when it first appeared, it may never have come back two years later. Even if it did, it may not have been so bas as to prevent her from working.
When anyone meets with an accident or suffers an injury it is much easier to figure the reason for the lower back pain, if any, at that stage.
When a person suffers a fall or meets with an accident, it's easy to figure out why the back hurts, at that stage.
Clinical experience has established that there may be a number of things that causes the back pain. It is important that we know what conditions are developing in your body and what is causing their development.
Mistake Number three: Harboring the illusion that one is too fit to have lower back pain.
Eating the right food, exercising properly and regularly and being in very good health is no guarantee the lower back pain will not strike. There are hundreds of case studies where people of different ages, different walks of life, all in top psychical condition have found themselves having to seek lower back pain relief.
In actual fact it is the people who exercise regularly who are more like to have lower back pain problems. Case studies have shown that people who are body builders, athletes, gymnasts, runners, swimmers, dancers, cyclists are more likely to have lower back problems than people who do not partake in any such physical activity at all.
Cyclists, because of their constant pedaling overwork one set of muscles, would definitely have a great muscle imbalance in their lower body.
Non athletic people are in no way different, their normal working practices causes them to create a muscle imbalance by overworking muscles in only a particular area of the body and neglecting others.
Physically fit or not, when muscle imbalance takes place you are in lower back trouble.
Mistake number Four: They keep treating the symptoms only.
Most treatments handed out, to get lower back pain relief, consist of electrical stimulants, anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone shots, all of which may remove the pain but not the problem for the pain.
Pain is the body sending you a signal that there is something wrong. Getting rid of the pain is not getting rid of the problem.
Take this analogy. The oil light comes up on your dashboard in your car while you are driving, which is a source of distraction and annoyance. You take a piece of duct tape and stick it over the oil light. You have removed the annoyance and disturbance, but if you do not stop and top up the essential oils in your car's engine it is going to break down and come to a grinding halt.
The human body is no different; the pain in the lower back is the signal that something is wrong that needs attention.
The lower back pain has appeared because there are some abnormal changes taking place, which are causing changes in your postural conditioning, the abnormality of which is placing under stress on your muscles, joints and ligaments.
Ignore the pain or treat the pain only and not its source, the stressed out your muscles, joints and ligaments are going to fail causing a very painful condition such as a herniated disc.
