General auto insurance is a necessary expense if you intend to drive a car.  It can, however, be a considerable expense depending on your age or driving history.  You may be tempted to simply do without it because it is so seldom used, but that would be a very poor choice because not only is it illegal in most areas to drive without insurance, but that one time that something actually does go wrong has the potential to cause financial ruin if the damages, whether to property or person, are bad enough.  One visit to the hospital could easily run many thousands of dollars if you are not financially protected.  The following article will outline five general tips that you can use to lower your monthly premium and save money on your general automobile insurance.

Increase Your Deductible

Like all general insurance, the deductible refers to the portion of the damages that you must pay out of your pocket before the insurance company steps in and covers the rest.  The level of your deductible will have a powerful influence on your monthly premium.

Raising your deductible will lower your monthly premium, but care must be taken to now raise it too much.  Doing so will result in having insurance that pays so little that you may as well not have any at all.

Choose The Right Car

Depending on the vehicle you drive, your insurance premiums can vary considerably.  For example, cars that people are more likely to drive in a less safe manner or cars that are more likely to be stolen tend to have higher premiums than other cars.  This is why general auto insurance for a sports car or classic car is much higher than it is for a modern sedan.

Features incorporated into the car can also affect your general auto insurance rates.  Passive restraints, since they reduce the risk of injury, will lower your rates, as will advanced braking systems and driver’s side air bags.

Drive Less

While not a well known method because it applies to so few people, driving less can actually help you save money on your general car insurance.  Most insurance companies will have a special rate for low mileage drivers, though they may require periodic odometer checks to make sure you are indeed conforming to their requirements.

Keep a Clean Driving Record

Every ticket, accident, or infraction will affect your premiums.  If you are able to maintain a clean driving record, it demonstrates to the broker that you are a safe driver who obeys the traffic laws and does not pose a danger to others.  That makes you an attractive customer for general auto insurance because they believe that they will be unlikely to ever have to pay a claim for you.

Shop Around

Comparing rates from multiple providers can be a great way to find the lowest auto insurance rates.  If the broker knows that you are actively shopping around, they may even be able to make a special deal for you.

While these are some of the most effective ways of lowering the cost of general auto insurance, there are countless more.  Speak with your car insurance broker to find out more about what you can do to lower your rates without compromising your protection.
