My Mother on Mother's Day

My Mother

A 'Mother' is that special creation of the Almighty God whom He has gifted with the unique power of giving life to a living being. No one can repay the debt of a mother. But we can certainly honor our mothers and bring smile on their faces by celebrating the special Mother's Day.

Motherly Advice

My Mother was always telling me items of information that sounded nerdy and I would often wonder where they all came from?

Make sure to change your underwear always; you never know when you'll be knocked over by a Bus.

(I was knocked over by a car once and as I fell my memory ran to this comment, often told me by my mother.)

Don't make that face or it'll solidify in that position.

Be careful or else you'll put your eye out.

What if everyone jumped into a well? Would you do it, too?

You have enough filth behind those ears to grow potatoes!

Please close that door! You were not born in a tent, were you?

If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Don't put that thing in your mouth; you don't know where it's been!

Take your hands out of your pocket, you will trip over.

Wait until your Father Gets home..... (He only did it twice in all the number of times she gave me this dire warning.)

To understand Mother's Day and what it really means you need to understand the person in your life called 'Mother'. Mother is one who nurtures you in her womb for nine months and brings you forth to enjoy the supreme blessing on earth, that is, Life. Mother is one who guides you through your infancy and turns the soft, helpless creature to the powerful and successful YOU. She is the guardian protecting you and supporting you, feeling for you and serving you silently always with a smile on her face. She prides herself watching you grow and provides you a shoulder to cry on whenever you need. She is your best friend.

For a child, every single day should be a Mothers Day. The essence of the meaning of Mother's Day is in the fact that we should try and make this day every year a memorable one for your mother. She should cherish the special feeling of this day and the intensity of that feeling should last her the lifetime. Unfortunately as her child many do not last into m your maturity. Treasure them whilst you are able and remember them forever afterwards.

This is the day to stop, remember, and pray for that special person in our life. Show her, that we would not have been, what we are today, if it had not been for her. This is the day to prove to your Mother that all her efforts, that towards making us a complete person, have been worthwhile and make her feel proud for us. In the broader sense of the term, Mothers' Day is a day to be grateful to God for being so kind as to bless us with this wonderful lady; our Mother.

There are a few things, which are common to all the mothers around the world. Apart from showering love and affection, mothers make it a point to keep an eye on every activity of their children- this of course arises as a result of her being too caring about her child, so that he/she is always unhurt.

Mother's Day History

The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and goes back to the times of ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. The early Christians celebrated the Mother's festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Interestingly, later on a religious order stretched the holiday to include all mothers, and named it as the Mothering Sunday. The English colonists settled in America discontinued the tradition of Mothering Sunday because of lack of time. In 1872 Julia Ward Howe organized a day for mothers dedicated to peace. It is a landmark in the history of Mother's Day.

In 1907, Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948), a Philadelphia schoolteacher, began a movement to set up a national Mother's Day in honor of her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. She solicited the help of hundreds of legislators and prominent businessmen to create a special day to honor mothers. The first Mother's Day observance was a church service honoring Anna's mother. Anna handed out her mother's favorite flowers, the white incarnations, on the occasion as they represent sweetness, purity, and patience. Anna's hard work finally paid off in the year 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday in honor of mothers.

Slowly and gradually the Mother's day became very popular and gift giving activity increased. All this commercialization of the Mother's day infuriated Anna as she believed that the day's sentiment was being sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit.

Regardless of Jarvis's worries, Mother's Day has flourished in the United States. Actually, the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year. Although Anna may not be with us but the Mother's day lives on and has spread to various countries of the world. Many countries throughout the world celebrate Mother's Day at various times during the year, but some such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.

Mothers Day date 2008

Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday is always celebrated on a Sunday so the actual date changes from year to year.

Mothers day date for 2008 is set as the 1st Sunday so it will be the 2nd March in the UK; the 2 Sunday in May for the USA and Australia, thus the 11th May 2008

There is an interesting social history to Mother's day in the USA. After the American Civil War was over Julia Ward Howe campaigned for a 'Mother's Day' to act as an anti war focus. Although never officially recognized as an anti war day, the demonstration day evolved into our current Mothers day over time.

Interesting Facts about Mothers

  • Rosa Parks was the mother of bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama that launched the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Mother Shipton was a Prophetess in Britain 500 years ago. She could see the future, and predicted that another Queen Elizabeth would sit on the throne of England. (QE II)
  • Mother's Day is now celebrated in many countries around the world. Australia, Mexico, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Belgium, Russia, China, Thailand, all have special celebrations to honor Mothers, but not in the same way or on the same day as the United States.

My mother always liked a little bit of humour and often told me it went a long way. Here is some I hope she would have smiled at: -

"The hand that rocks the cradle usually is attached to someone who isn't getting enough sleep."- John Fiebig

"I'd like to be the ideal mother, but I'm too busy raising my kids."- Unknown

The mother of three notoriously unruly youngsters was asked whether or not she'd have children if she had it to do over again. "Yes," she replied. "But not the same ones."- David Finkelstein

A little boy forgot his lines in a Sunday school presentation. His mother was in the front row to prompt him. She gestured and formed the words silently with her lips, but it did not help. Her son's memory was blank. Finally, she leaned forward and whispered the cue, "I am the light of the world." The child beamed and with great feeling and a loud clear voice said, "My mother is the light of the world." - Bits and Pieces, 1989

To me she was!

A teacher gave her class of second graders a lesson on the magnet and what it does. The next day in a written test, she included this question: "My full name has six letters. The first one is M. I pick up things. What am I?" When the test papers were turned in, the teacher was astonished to find that almost 50 percent of the students answered the question with the word Mother- Unknown.

I can remember the times she told me ‘That she certainly, was not my slave,' when she never the less bent and pick the object up off the floor.

She often spoke these words to me and it was until many years had past that I found they were written

The family

is like a garden

with joy

for all to share,

With tender, growing blossoms

that thrive on love

and care,

And when

the flowers are gathered

for a very special day,

They make

a bright and beautiful

happiness bouquet.

Today, I believe she had very little faith in my gardening ability.

Like I continually pulled the flowers up thinking they were weeds.

I'm sitting here, I'm thinking back to a time when I was young,

My memory is clear as day, I'm listening to the dishes clink,

You were downstairs; you would sing songs of praise,

And all the times we laughed with you,

And all the times that you stayed true to us,

Now we say, I said, I thank you,

I'll always thank you,

More than you could know,

Than I could ever show,

And I love you, I'll always love you,

There's nothing I won't do to say these words to you,

That you're beautiful forever,

You were my mom,

The only thing I ever had was you, It's true,

And even when the times got hard you were there,

To let us know that we'd get through, you showed me how to be a man,

You taught me how to understand the things people do,

You showed me how to love my God,

You taught me that not everyone knows the truth,

And I thank you,

I'll always thank you,

More than you could know,

Than I could ever show,

And I love you, I'll always love you,

There's nothing I won't do to say these words to you,

That you will live forever, always.

If there was a song or verse this is the one for my Mum.

Should there be an apostrophe in Mothers day?

The simple answer is yes and because we are talking about all mothers rather than just one particular mother, the apostrophe should sit outside the S. So to be grammatically correct we should refer to it as Mothers' Day.

I believe our Five sons will honour their Mother Val in the same way I did with my Mother. Thank You GOD

One in 11 Australian women will get breast cancer during their lifetime.

It could be you, your sister, mother, cousin, aunt, partner or friend. Breast cancer really can affect any one of us.

Next Mothers Day you have the opportunity to do something real to support continuing research to fight breast cancer. Make a difference by simply walking, running or sponsoring a participant to help raise vital funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Enjoyed your thoughts here! Never knew anything about Mothers' Day farther back than Jarvis. Since we're of somewhat similar ages...thought I'd ask about a flower tradition that no one I know seems to be familiar with...Roses. Going to church on Mothers'Day Sunday, if your mother was alive, you wore a red rose on your lapel (men and women both) and if your mother was deceased, you wore a white rose. Is this something you're familiar with? My mother passed from leukemia at the early age of 62. I miss her every day.

Your feelings are correct in this matter. Chrysantheums are more the normal flower for Mother's Day.

I have written a hub on the language of love Roses are always looked on as the Meaning of love in flowers.

I just figured it out. All the things your mum told you, my mum told me and I was thinking wow, it is international. Then I realized, you're an Australian and my mum is a Queenslander, so it was probably more country orientated.

I didn't really appreciate my mum until I was much older and when I had my first girl and called her to let her know she replied, "now you will know what I went through". A couple of years after that I called her to apologize for all the hell I must have put her through as a child. It took me a while to realize what a truly remarkable woman she was and still is.

If I grow up half as strong and decent as she is, I will turn out a fine person. Thanks Mr Marmalade, I have sent this link to my brother and sister. It is a great hub. Donna

You are overwelming me with your praise.

Did you know that next year Queensland are going to celebrate the Sunshine a little better. They suddenly realise that day light saving for six months does not fade the curtains.

Thank you i think all Mums are great. Just for having us kids.

Sensible advice she has given you. You know, some people frown so much that, after 40, they are stuck with a frowning face. And others too, like always wearing clean underwear hehem and you remembering it when you had one.

Thanks, Frank!
