MAKING FLOWERS TALK: A Photography Adventure
76“Mama, flowers smile when they see you”, that’s what my daughter told me when she saw me with my camera one day.
When I started my photography adventure, I was always taking pictures of flowers be they in my garden or somebody else’s garden. Every time I see flowers, I could not resist them; I just had to take their picture. If I do not have my camera with me, I will try to ask or beg or buy a few sprigs just so I can take their pictures when I get home.
So my family and friends got used to seeing me take pictures of flowers wherever and whenever I have a camera. I always get so engrossed with flowers such that sometimes I even have to be reminded to take photos of people too.
Anyway, my adventures with flower photography made me discover many things about them and one discovery that I am sharing in this hub is that – flowers can "talk". Yes, you can coax them to talk with a camera by discovering their most expressive angle. Not only that, but by a slight shift of the camera angle, the message they express can change.
When Flowers Talk
The captions I used in these photos are what the flowers "told" me either while I took their photos or after I uploaded the photos to my computer. They are simply my own understanding of what the flowers are trying to tell me. However, some other message might come to you as you look at these photos. If a new message comes to you, then that is how the flowers talk to you. I would appreciate it if you share with us what their messages are.
Flowers Tug at Your Heart
One of the reasons why I love taking pictures of flowers is that they are beautiful by themselves. With just the right light, they will speak up to you some strong emotion. This photo shows you what I mean by that.
This is one of my earliest flower photos. I was lucky to get the perfect light in this such that it seems to be lighted from within. Thus I title this “deep in my heart”.
Flowers are Fresh and Full of Hope
This flower is called “baby’s breath”. It is usually used as an add-on to a bouquet. Its freshness and innocence seem to capture a new beginning. So I think it’s saying, “hello world!”
Change the Angle, Change the Message
The next three photos are that of the same flowers that I took from different angles. Notice how the messages they convey also changed. Don’t you agree?
And here are two more photos, this time of Anthurium , again showing how a change of angle of the same flower can also change the message it conveys.
Doesn’t this remind you of body language in people?
More Flower Talk
I got more flower photos that speak out to me but I think there are enough examples here of what I’m trying to say.
I wish to reiterate my earlier request. If you do get a different message from the photos, could you please share the message with us? Thank you.

Very aptly written hub, as always beautiful pictures and I would add a good ear that hears well. I think I agree that they spoke truth to you and that you heard exactly what needed to be said. I would love to see more -a part 2 maybe? Your artistic genius is exhibited in the very heart of your love of photography - great work and great heart!
Hi Tere,
It's nice of you to drop by. Thank you very much.
New Zealand, wow, I've never been there. I was in Australia at about this time once and I remember how beautiful their flowers are. Unfortunately, I was not into photography then though. So my pictures then were the usual tourist snap shots.
Again, thanks for visiting and leaving a comment!
Hi coffeesnob,
Thank you for dropping by dear friend. You always make me happy with your comments. You never fail to inspire me with your beautiful and kind words.
A part 2? - hmmm, that's something to think about.
These are some excellent images. You can always find me in the spring out shooting flowers with my macro lens. It seems like you cannot go wrong with these subjects.
You really do have a talent, Jill! Your profile name fits you perfectly :D
Jill I just love the captions that you put in with the pictures of the flowers . A very creative mind at work .And as usual your work with film Is outstanding !
Hello Artemus,
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, it's always fun to shoot flowers. Once I focus on them, I usually lose my sense of time.
I just wish to make a qualification though on what you said - "you cannot go wrong with these subjects". Unfortunately, sometimes we can go wrong especially if we do not know how to use the light. I still remember how I did some injustice to their beauty during my first attempts in photography.
Thanks again for visiting and leaving a comment. I'd love to see your flower photos. I'm happy to meet a fellow enthusiast.
Hi Dohn,

Hi tim-tim,
Great! Thanks for the visit and your lovely comment!
Beautiful images. The language of flowers--they speak volumes, if only we can stop and not just smell them but allow them to talk to us. I'm a great flower lover and now, one more reason to just sit and gaze.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent.
Hello anglnwu,
Thank you very much! I'm happy to know that you are also a flower lover! If only we can get together and compare notes, it would just be great!
Beautiful images! Flowers are some of my favorite subjects as well.
Yehey, another flower lover! Nice to meet you Mitch King!
