The origins of MBS

Mountainboarding has developed beyond being a wacky sport idea into a legitimate board sport and MBS has become a highly successful company. There are now tens of thousands of MBS boards out there hitting grass slopes and dirt jumps.

As you would expect, mountainboarding was developed by snowboarders looking for a way to ride when in the summer months when there was no snow. It all started in 1993 when friends Patrick McConnell and Jason Lee developed the first three mountainboard prototypes in California. They moved to Colorado to start their business. In 1994 MBS manufactured 35 mountainboards.

Over the next few years the buzz grew and with clever marketing campaigns together with an increasing word of mouth sales grew steadily. 1998 saw MBS starting to refine its products and become more user friendly and suitable for newcomers.

In 1999 the company received investment and spent heavily on marketing and promotion to increase awareness of the brand and the sport as a whole. It paid off when the company sold more boards in the holiday season than in the entire year before.

2000 saw a lot of media exposure on TV, radio and print. 2001-2002 saw the first of many MBS Ramp shows going on tour. This time called the “Big Air Team”. 2003 was a big year. The tenth anniversary and the year many proprietary new products which are still known and used today were launched. These included the Matrix truck, F3 bindings and T1 tyres. A new tour, this time of US schools hit the road to demonstrate mountainboarding to the masses.

The last 5 years have seen mountainboarding take off all over the world. More big brands getting involved and the level of riding rapidly increasing. MBS continues to refine its products and support the growth of the industry. MBS riders continue to dominate competitions all over the world and our employees, riders and friends continue to help introduce the sport to new people year after year.

MBS Board Range

MBS have grown their range over the years. There are now 4 key sub categories within the range: Pro, Comp, Core and Atom. The boards cater to different levels of rider and allow riders to pick a board which is going to suit their riding style.

MBS Pro 100 - This is the top of the range board. Designed for advanced freestyle and going fast. It offers a stiff reverse cap construction deck with plenty of pop and our signature Matrix Lite channel truck system which together with aluminium Rockstar Pro hubs create a bombproof board.

MBS Pro 95 - A shorter version of the Pro 100 built for smaller riders and those who love rotations. The shorter deck length reduces swing weight. It is very popular amongst younger riders who ride at a very high level but are not big enough for a Pro 100 yet.

MBS Pro 90 - The ultimate production kiteboard. Designed in conjunction with the MBS Pro Kite Team. This board is designed to be soley used as a freestyle kiteboard. It is very light thanks to the deck shape and also the components that were developed for it including titanium axled skate trucks, carbon composite deck, hardwareless hubs.

MBS Comp 95X - The top freeride board. A solid deck, with bombproof matrix trucks and beefy 9" tyres. This board is made to go anywhere. The V5 brake kit completes the package to make it cope with steep alpine tracks.

MBS Comp 95 - A very versatile board suitable for all levels of rider. Entry level riders who requires a larger and stiffer set up will love this board. Those who like to mix it up with a bit of freestyle and a bit of freeriding with love it too.

MBS Comp 90 - A great crossover board for those who like to dabble in a bit of kiteboarding but still like to mountainboard. The shorter deck length and vector trucks make it a great kiteboard. It is also popular amongst younger freestyle mountainboarders.

MBS Core 95 - A all rounder at a great price. Nice a light yet more than capable of hitting a hill and doing some freestyle.

MBS Core 90 - A great kiteboard. Short deck length and lightweight components combine to make a nimble board perfect for kiteboarders or younger riders who find the bigger boards too heavy.

MBS Atom 95 - The perfect board for entry-level riders wanting to experience the thrill of mountainboarding at dirt cheap prices.

MBS Atom 95X - A great entry level board, exactly the same as the standard Atom 95, but equipped with a V4 brake system.

MBS Atom 85 - The junior board. A shorter, narrower deck, narrower trucks, and 7" wheels all come together to make a board perfect for children who are not yet big enough to deal with the weight of the adult sized boards. The F1 bindings are designed to fit smaller feet too.

MBS Atom 85X - A junior board exactly the same specification as the Atom 85 except it is equipped with a V3 brake system.
