MEDIA-CONTEMPT
63I watch CNN because they have always been a reputable news media. Lately, I have taken time to view some of the other stations (local being the worst) and the only words that come to mind is “media circus”. They are completely devoid of human-interest stories and given our current economical situation; I personally could use some enjoyable news for a change.
While funny in some respects, this video is also extremely sad. Keep in mind that all persons interviewed were randomly selected from a cross section of Americans (aged young adults to seniors). Anyone care to wager that if the same cross-section of their people had been interviewed they would find the same lack of awareness. It is frightening that so many people run around choosing to be oblivious when it comes to their own government’s activities, foreign affairs, and current events. Then they go to the polls and vote-- based on what?
“Being ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to learn.” ~Benjamin Franklin
Our media concerns me because they create stories taken out of context for the sole purpose of sensationalism. This alone can invoke riots, promote hatred and motivate mobs. They also fail to tell us the whole truth when it comes to our governments activities. Most media sources could care less about the impact they may have on world dynamics. After all, it is all about selling papers, increasing network viewing numbers and keeping their jobs.
Still, as bad as some news agencies are, I fear the worst when I hear they are filing for bankruptcy or just plain “closing up shop”. The Chapter 11 casualty list has grown by one more; The Chicago Sun Times. I’m concerned that our free press could meld into one central news agency and that is not a good thing!
THE G-20 SUMMIT
The British and Royal Family have warmly received our president and his wife. I had to chuckle when CNN, and other medias, made such a big issue out of Michelle Obama hugging the queen. During a photo session, Michelle Obama put her arm around the queen who reciprocated by putting her arm around Ms. Obama’s waist.
Is there protocol for behavior when meeting the Royal Family? Yes, and I, being British raised, believe it should be thrown out! Times have changed and the Queens’ subjects have too. Princess Diana was adored and respected. She displayed kindness and humility worldwide and was an example of what a good leader/s should be! I think the Queens response to Ms Obama is a step forward for change.

President Obama gave a thumbs down on the suggestion of a "one world bank" regulating monetary finances. He felt that each country should remain in charge of their financial resources. Everyone agreed to file this idea where it belonged, in the trash. This decision was a prelude to the long held idea of---The World Bank and New World Order. Something the Bush boy’s (father and son) talked about repeatedly during their tenure in office. Good job Mr. President---keep up the good work! I may not always agree with what you do or say, but I will continue to observe and support you. My vote next election will be your scorecard.
SELECTIVE JUSTICE
Senator Ted Stevens , (R-Alaska), gained his freedom thanks to the justice departments bungling of his case. However, he did not get off scot-free. His constituents handed him a verdict; they voted him out of office!
Here is another unfair scenario; our political leaders refuse to take action against individuals illegally crossing our boarders. Instead, they continue to protect them from any form of legal accountability while Americans sit in prison. In my opinion, this is blatant discrimination and proves how amoral our judicial system and government has become.
Let’s consider the number of American citizens we have in our prisons and jails. This country has 5% of the world’s population, and of that number, 25% are incarcerated. How would you feel if this type of unfair justice confronted you or a loved one? It happens in our courts everyday!
I have no issue with immigrants coming into our country. However, I strongly believe they should meet all legal requirements in order to enter---just like everyone else.

Sweetiepie, Thanks for the comment. I'll have to check out the BBC and ABC websites. I tend to stay away from FOX News. I enjoy reading your various hubs too.
I hate Fox news too. CNN also has good articles online. I still watch the news from time to time, but with writing online it is just easier to pull up a news article for me.
Nice article and also educative it's important issue for people live outside USA to learn what's currently on in USA.
SweetiePie,
Your feelings and mine on Fox news are the same. Like you, it is easier to find up to date news and possible articles on the internet.

Abibaker,
Thanks for visiting my hubpages…Knowledge of one’s rights in any country are vital to their safety and freedoms. I appreciate your comments.
Have you seen the recent CNN documentary on lifting the veil in Afghanistan? Highly recommend it if you have not already catched it.
SweetiePie,
No I haven't but I will be sure to check it out...Thanks for the heads up.
Yeah, I get irritated with the so-called news channels as well. Lately, I have come to rely on Jon Stewart as my daily news source :)
shibashake,
Guess I will have to spend some time watching John Stewart. I didn’t realize he was into the informative end of entertainment. Thanks for the heads up!
lol - he can be surprisingly informative. He is a very smart guy, and conducts some great guest interviews. Last week, he had on the President of Liberia.
Sure, there are the usual penis jokes, but there is frequently much substance in comedy :)
I will definitely tune into his program…I have such a warped sense of humor I’m sure I will enjoy Mr. Stewart.
Good article, very balanced. I can't tell if you lean left, independent or neither. I am not a fan of Obama, but I try to see the good things he does through the fog of extremism. The fact that he spoke against a world banking system was a new one to me, and I am glad to hear it.
Alexander, thanks for your comment…I try to keep an open mind when it comes to our new president. He stepped into to quite a mess so we need to give him time…So far, I see some good things and one has to remember; no president will please all the people all the time!
Nancy, the thing I like about reading your work is that I'm never sure ahead of time which track you are going to take. That is so refreshing!
Maybe people are ignorant of what is really going on because we are presented with rubbish instead of news. So much of what we hear in the regular media is celebrity news, formally the business of tabloids.
Delores, Thank you for such a nice compliment. I try to present the injurious issues that we need to recognize. As we know, the media is not always truthful. In fact, they tilt to whatever sells for that particular day. Gone are the days of dependable and informative news articles that we could trust…

Great article. I still watch CNN occasionally, but most of the time I read the BBC and the local ABC website for my news. I just prefer to read it these days I guess.
