What do you think?

MP Expenses
In the UK at the moment we are experiencing a period of turmoil over the expenses that our MP’s are getting. All the political party are about to be caught our and the news is full of new calms. Swimming pools, a moat, horse manure are just some of the things we are hearing about.

It seams that the general public are really annoyed about this and some low life MP’s are saying things like it is disgusting and wrong and the system is being abused.

What do you think? At the bottom of this hub you can let me know.

My view is simple if they calmed within the rules and someone else checked what they were calming for then they have done nothing wrong. They just were reimbursed for what the rules allowed them to and as this practice is something we all do then “cast the first stone”

Do you ask for all the benefits you are entitled to?

Do you expect all the perks and expenses at work that your boss allows?

Do you make sure that your accountant puts every thing through your accounts that he can?

Now that this legal loophole has been discovered I feel certain that the general public and our government will insist that changes be made. However before you cast the first stone.

If they are really so bent on helping and serving the people, allow them to prove themselves by paying their own expenses and stop using our taxes to pay their salaries for a year, just to feel the challenges that we are all already facing because of their actions.

Paul, I have very mixed feelings about this one. Firstly, I don't understand how it had to come to this. Is the government's own audit office so ineffectual as to accept these spurious claims at face value? Secondly, I hate to say it, but there can be very few employees who don't take advantage of their bosses at some point, although admittedly we're usually talking about helping oneself to stamps, envelopes, or the odd personal phone call in office hours. Claiming for fictitious mortgages comes into a whole separate category!

Reading through the hype in the Telegraph this week, I do wonder if the journalists have simply gone into a feeding frenzy. Some of the claims in the context of second homes are actually not overly outrageous yet they've been made to appear so. I think that the most blatant excesses should be repaid, and a line drawn under the rest.

Thank you for your comment Amanda.

It does look at the moment that the government office is ineffectual and this changing will be a very good thing.

It does look as if some of the clams are just dishonest and of course action will be taken. They are human just like us and some will take advantage of the system and be economical with the truth. It is good news and papers will sell, people just love to point the finger.

I do agree with your comment “Some of the claims in the context of second homes are actually not overly outrageous yet they've been made to appear so. I think that the most blatant excesses should be repaid, and a line drawn under the rest. “

Paul.

I think what has annoyed people most is finding out that MPs who earn far above the "average" salary have been claiming for everything from food to gardening and most things in between. When the "rules" clearly state the expenses should be for expenses arising wholly and solely in the execution of their duties as MPs. It just shows they are far too removed from the people they are supposed to represent.
