My stew?

I began making this stew over 35 years ago. I said that someone bought it to my house, but my friends said that I was the originator. Well as my hub, My phenomenal memory, shows I can't remember some important things in my life. So for now I'll claim it. However, if anyone out there remembers that you bought this to my house, you can have the credit, LOL!

Guess what, I just found out, oh, that ole Internet, I found the stew on it, In various forms, but not like mine. Yes, and I found out something about black eyed peas that I didn't know. It is that, Black Eyed Peas were brought to America with slaves from Africa and became popular in the Civil War days during the battle of Vicksburg. Wow, who knew. I digress.

The Stew

Before I begin. I've used a variety of meats, I've used ground beef, ground turkey, sweet Italian sausage, sauteed chicken breast, ground pork, and even shrimp, (didn't like shrimp with it). My favorite is ground turkey. So for this recipe I'm going to use ground turkey.

Ingredients:

2 lbs of ground turkey

2 bags of frozen black eyed peas

1 bag of frozen corn

1 bag of frozen okra

1 lg. can of whole tomatoes

1 lg onion

2 garlic cloves

1 lg can of stewed tomatoes

1 reg. can of tomato paste, and 1 reg can tomato sauce

seasonings: Lemon pepper seasoning, garlic salt, salt, pepper to taste( or just use your favorite seasoning.

1 lg can of ripe olives


Cook peas until done. Season and saute turkey, garlic and onion. Add all ingredients to peas, cook for about 30 minutes, to completely blend all ingredients.

My family loves it over rice, I prefer it alone. I also serve it with cornbread.

This is my favorite recipe to take to BYO gatherings, when I show up with this dish, it is devoured before anything else. Try it!

fastfreta, I like this recipe. It a keeper. And yes I knew that about black eyed peas. I recently found out when I was doing some research on the Gold Coast - Ghana's traditions and culture for a short story that I was writing.

Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure mine will be anywhere delicious as your because you've had a head start in ppractising, but I'm going to give it a try.

Love love love black eyed peas! And yes these are the good luck peas for the New Year - I have given them as gifts at that time.

Such a history should never be forgotten - we have moved so far away from nutrition and it is hurting us. These black eyed peas will heal what ails us. When I ate in an African restaurant they did a recipe that included making the peas into balls and a quick frying and I was a happy woman!!!!

Lady_E, since the peas comes from Africa, it probably is the same or similar.

Veronica, I've never tried it without the tomatoes, but I think if I were you, I'd give it a try. If you do, please let me know how it turns out.

DynamicS, I have changed this recipe so many times, I didn't begin using all of these ingredients that are in it until later. Over the years I've made changes and still continue to do so. I didn't mention Cilantro, because not everyone can find that, but I also add that once in awhile. So just play around with it and make it your own.

Man, that sounds great. I'm definitly going to try it. I luv black eyed peas and your history lesson was good as I did not know black eyed peas' history. I want to try your sour cream pound cake too. I am a singer/musician who loves to cook. I relate it to music... creativity, textures etc. Plus, if you like to eat, then you need to learn how to cook. I survived as a bachelor for many years knowing how to cook. Now, I cook for me and my wife. lol

This sounds like an excellent dish, fastfreta! I love black-eyed peas, but I've never had them in a stew like this. I think I'll try it and the cornbread sounds perfect with it.

Sounds good. Question: Since we have a over abundance of purple hull peas, do you think it would work instead? I appreciate your thoughts.

Actually being from the south, I know what purple hull peas are, and yes it would work well with any of those kinds of peas. I also would use crowder or field peas. I think the recipe would work even better with the fresh version of these peas, I just don't have access to them here in Southern California, at least where I live. My suggestion is, try the stew with any of these peas and the recipe the way I wrote it the first time, then the next time play with it, vary it to your taste, and see what you come up with. I would like to hear from you about the results.
