Me Kissing My New Baby

Every-time I wear my hair down and go into public I am bombarded with lots of questions, comments and second glances because my hair is so long.

It is unusual to have real long hair these days. People are too busy and just don't want to mess with it ; along with all the short hair fads and styles it's just becoming a thing of the past.

As a little girl I had frizzy, short, stunted hair. I was like every other little girl with dreamy visions of myself with hair like Barbie or Rapunzel. I would get a towel or sheet and drape it over my head and act like it was my long hair.

My mother had a time fixing my little mop. To make matters worse, at three years I hid behind a dresser and chopped it in every wrong direction (This happened a few years before my long hair dreams obviously). My poor devastated mother did her best to cut it evenly then finally put in a tight curly perm.

Mom would trim the ends and my bangs until the age of five, then begin my journey to growing long hair. She actually prayed over my hair that it would grow so she could do something with it and because I wanted it long so bad.

Her prayers were answered at first slowly then progressed further. At around twelve years my hair was to the middle of my back. Of course I begin the fluffing and curling allot.

In my teens it had reached my waist, I begin taking hair vitamins. I still did allot hot curler styling, hair spraying ect. Those were the finding boyfriends days when frills were the thing.

At age sixteen ( almost seventeen) I graduated early from high school and married a few weeks later. My hair was now at the top of my hips.

By this time I had realized the importance of ditching the cheap shampoos and conditioners and using the more intensive moisturizing name brands. I also would do hot oil treatments and time soaking in conditioner. "Using hot curlers less contributed to more growth as well."

Before long I was expecting my first baby and begin taking prenatal vitamins. By the time she was born my hair had grew six more inches (to my upper thighs).

Then came baby number two ( three and a half years later). My hair grew three or four more inches.

In a ten year span I've had four children, my last one was born October 13, 2008. My hair is now around 5ft or a little over. I am 5ft 7in in height.

I am not sure it is the having babies or the way that I take care of it, but I have enjoyed my little girl dream of long hair.

It is a little difficult with kids sometimes so I just put it up in curls or some other updo style. Sometimes I just take half of it and twist it halfway up in a clip where it still looks long, but stays out of my way. I still wear it down allot with various styles or just hanging loose straight with nothing in it ( my husbands favorite way). I usually tie it up or braid it when I sleep.

http://hubpages.com/hub/How-To-Make-A-Stylish-Updo-With-Long-Hair

I wash my hair in the shower with a big handful of shampoo and conditioner. It takes around two hours to dry natural, that is how I usually dry it.

Sometimes I still even frill up and curl it all (that takes a while). I use Conair hot sticks and TRESemme hairspray extra hold as well as shampoo and conditioner in that brand. Though it is very important to change around on at least your conditioner or your hair becomes immune and your hair don't respond as well. I also like Pantene, aussies three minute miracle, St. Ives Intensive mint treatment and for a beautiful glossy shine I use LOREAL Paris VIVE PRO moisturising conditioner. " All these can be found at Wal-Mart or drugstore."

I am 27 now, very busy mommy of four and never plan to cut my hair. I get a kick out of kids I see that say, " Mommy, look at that lady with big hair!" or " Mommy, she looks like Wepunzel!" Lots of women say, " I could never mess with that long of hair!" To be honest I poured over myself more style frustrations when my hair was short and medium long than I do now, plus I save money on haircuts, coloring, perms ect. It's really not as bad as you think!http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-grow-long-hair

Amazing, singingmommy! I've never known anyone with hair anywhere near that long! They tell me that long, uncut hair is worth a lot of money (I guess they could make quit a few wigs out of it.) Interesting hub.

I've always prefered the long hair girls.

Where I go to church non of the ladies there cut their hair. Some have hair about as long as yours.

To me it makes a woman look more attractive (not seductive) and lady like with long hair.

hi singingmommy, that is a great hub, and a beautiful head of hair, in the bible it says a womans crown of glory is her hair, and that is the truth. there is nothing like a beautiful woman with long flowing hair, the sun light adding a glow to it as she walks with her soul in plain sight for everyone to see.

Reading your hub, I was transported back to fairy tale days and I immediately envisioned Rapunzel. (I guess that is most people's reaction) LOL Wow, taking care of such a long hair must be an extensive job.  But you look good with it singing mommy. :-) I enjoyed your hub.

Yes is very pretty...do you get headaches though...it must weigh a bunch?  my daughter has long hair also...but not that long...and she has it cut every once in a while (it grows back quickly) and they make wigs for women with breast cancer...It has to be at least 18 inches after they cut it, I think. MY MY you have 4 children?  busy young mom I see...but I also grew up with mine and that is why I became a grandma early in life...yet it still goes by way too fast...Nicely done sweetie...G-Ma :o) hugs & Peace

singingmommy profile image

singingmommy  says:

Thank's G-ma. Actually the only headaches I get are due to high blood-pressure problems, not many of them with meds. The Womens World did a research and said that headaches and long hair are not connected, that your neck muscles adjust to the weight naturally, not sure. Thats neat about your daughter.

Yes, I have four kids two boys and two girls ages 9, 6, 4, and 3months. I love every minute of it. I would have allot more if I didn't have to have C-sections, had a big house and lots of money:.)

I like long hair - yours looks lovely!

Mine isn't nearly as long - it's waist-length. Because I have very fine, slippery, fair hair, this is the longest that looks good without splits, etc.

I had very long hair up until the age of twenty where I could almost sit on it. I trimmed it a few times, but unfortunately I was talked into cutting it. For a few years I always had short hairstyles, but finally I grew it to about the middle of my back. Right now I am growing it out again and whereas it may not be as long as it was in the past, I always find it odd when people tell other people how to grow their hair. For instance, people used to tell me I looked better once I cut my hair, but I just do not agree with that. To me it is more important to be true to what I like than to conform to what others expect of me.

mandybeau profile image

mandybeau  says:

Mine grows like a weed, it is very strong and naturally more straight than curly,I suppose its like Asian hair, although I am not Asian, so I guess it must be Spanish. pparently hair and DNA origin are factors.

I hate straight hair bigtime so I curl it. I have always had it long as I can't be bothered with having to go to the hairdressers every 5 minutes, for a trim.

But one thing I detest is the paddle flat look people are having at the moment it looks soo fake.

And the styles always look o.k. on someone else, but don't ever suit me.

I have had it so I can sit on it, I have shaved it off one long hot summer. ( Bad mistake ) My head wasn't the same shape as the person I was eminating.

Didn't matter back to long 1 1/2 years later.

But alot of our native people have this frizzy hair, and it takes forever to grow.

I use to want long hair, like yours. I was named after Crystal Gayle, so she was my inspiration. However, in my teens the headaches from my waist length hair became unbearable. I finally caved in and cut it. It has been almost waist length again, with the same results. I love it long and healthy, healthy being they key to keeping it manageable.

I plan to grow it to my hip bones and keep it there, as my husband loves it long.

great hub.... when i was a kid, i'd always had my hair cut so short that i'd fit in with the boys....but after grade 6, and realizing that i had nice hair, mom convinced me to grow it... Just as an inspiration, mom would rub my hair with warm coconut milk and give me a massage every two weeks or so.... i mean this really helps. It keeps the hair's luster and makes it shine... it is not true that if u have long hair then u have split ends.. the key is to know what your hair needs and to give it to it. Nice hair... my dream (recently) is to grow my hair like Herman Li the lead guitarist in dragonforce ... http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.hermanli.com/images/hermanli_by_rudy.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.hermanli.com/&usg=__lFOrbc_loxkxZo8QIDb

Hello Singingmommy,

I love your hair and the hub. It's interesting. When I was a child I used to pray a lot too for a long hair. Sometimes, I dreamed that my hair was cut ridiculously short and I am awaken by my sobs because I looked so ugly with the short hair. I've tried the long and the short but I often find myself uncomfortable with the hair in my avatar. L.O.L

I cannot grow it as long as yours because I hardly reached five feet tall and I would look smaller. But it fits you beautifully.

singingmommy profile image

singingmommy  says:

Wow! Thanks for all the nice comments. I enjoy reading about your hair experiences too.

dark&lovely, I do get lots of compliments from men for my long hair, many have said they wished their wives would grow their hair long. I have had some hair damage, but nothing that hair treatments didn't cure, I never had to cut it.

compu-smart    I very much doubt I'll ever see 18ft....whooooo

I do wear my hair in many styles up and down, curly or straight. This plain style just shows the length better.

I had long hair for many years. Mine would only grow to just past my hips. What I remember most was shutting it in the car window, sitting on it and giving myself whip-lash and burning up two vacuum cleaner motors because just a few hairs would tangle the whole brush mechanism!! One of my best friends has hair as long as yours and she once drove 50 miles with her hair stuck in the car door. A truck driver flagged her down finally! I still miss it : )

Thanks for the memories.

I had long hair as a kid gt it cut short in high school and a couple of years ago it was shorter than my man's short back and sides. He'd always wanted me to grow it and we were going on a camping trip for a few months so I thought why not.In my mid 40s I figured it was last chance - long hair on old women really doesnt look good

It was a nightmare growing it out - took a year just to get to a bob because it had to cut to take that layers out. Its now shoulder length and still a nightmare - it is hot in the summer and Im not sure how much longer Id keep it - he of course loves - it but I like long hair too and he's not prepared to grow his!

I notice it costs a fortune too in hair colouring - need 2 boxes now -and conditioner, which I didn't need before and also shampoo. I find it incredibly hearvy too - I guess mine is thicker than normal and I thinkif I let go much longer it would start hurting my neck!

I was recently struggling with the thought of cutting my hair. It is down to my waist now. My biggest problem is dealing with tangles and knots. How do you keep your hair from turning into a giant hairball??? I'd really like to know so I can try a new technique.

Beautiful! The longest I had my hair was down the middle of my back, though I have shaved my head twice and I am not quite 25.

I am trying to grow my hair now... it is only just past my ears! Since I am pregnant with number three, it is seeming to grow a little faster. I think my partner would prefer I had long hair too... most of my family and friends at church have longer hair, but say I look okay with short. I can't wait to get some length. Just dealing with bleaching and dryness, split ends etc.

Will keep an eye out for more from you... :-)

Be blessed
