Myspace Or Facebook Choose One or Both?
73So you want to market yourself. One way that is suggested by many is to use social networking sites such as Facebook or Myspace. I personally have set up accounts in the last month on both Myspace and Facebook and have seen a slight difference. Both of them have there pros and cons.
I joined facebook because of suggestions from family members. When I first got into it I quickly was able to find my family members and friends. I was able to join a ton of groups that have my interest and because of that I gained a few more friends.
I have found the user interface to be very simple and easy to use. They do a good job of not making the site to busy and a good job of making it visually appealing. There other thing that I like, are all the apps. I have really become addicted to Snowboarders vs Skiers (currently ranked in the top 1400! overall).
One thing that might be bad if you are in the business of marketing yourself. You can't see other people's profiles or a limited version of the profile unless you are friends with them. In the process of trying to find friends I have incorrectly guessed that someone was a person I knew. Another thing I have noticed is that some of the apps (actually most) are not designed by Facebook and therefore are pron to errors. You do get a friendly error message that asks you to try again, but that can be frustrating.
MySpace
Like Facebook, MySpace allows for users to join groups, add friends, and send each other messages. There are a few more things MySpace adds to your profile that Facebook does not, like a music player, and video player. You can add a profile song and a profile video which is pretty cool. I also found that finding friends is pretty easy. I searched by the school they (or we) went to (and discovered that none of the guys I ran around with are on MySpace as a mater of fact not to many people I know are on either MySpace or Facebook).
The thing that makes me very uncomfortable about MySpace is the amount of porn spam that I get in my email box. At least 2-3 per week get in there, and I doubt all those young women really want to date me! I suspect the reason that I get this is because my profile is not set to private. But I wanted it to be easier for people to find me (friends, classmates, colleagues, etc). I also think some of the profiles out there are way to ugly. I know MySpace gives you the choice but come on people be nice to the eyes. Some colors were not meant for computer monitors.
So Which One?
My answer to the above question, is to use both. Not everyone uses one or the other so use them both. I'm sure if I looked harder I could find more friends on myspace, but I just have not spent a lot of time on it. I admittedly use facebook more, although not a ton. If wanting to use as self promotion for people to see your blogs or hubs MySpace might be a little better. If you want to avoid spam, then Facebook seems to be better (for the moment). Personally being new to the whole online social networking I choose to use them both. That way if anyone is actually out there looking for me, then its that much easier to find me. Who knows maybe I have a rich, cousin twice removed that want to give me his life savings when he/she dies. If that happens then heck its all worth it right!
In all seriousness though using both allows more people to reach you and for you to reach more people. I would recomend using both (and any others that might pop up from time to time).

I don't blame you for banning MySpace. Just with the spam alone on MySpace its almost not worth it. Facebook is a favorite in our household as well.

Thank you for all the information. Personally, I find MYSPACE disgusting, but then again I am an "old lady" right? I tried to keep my kids off of it and don't even allow it in my house.... (I guess I don't like it, yikes!) I prefer Facebook by a long shot. I feel it is safer because only your friends get to view your profile not your friends of friends of friends... etc. I think that the porn stuff is rampant on Myspace, but Facebook is far more tame in that area. I love chatting with my buddies of Facebook. :)
