Mad men is not only a popular TV program on AMC, but the spectacular vintage ties and skinny ties worn on the program have turned into a huge fad in men’s fashion. The Modern Men TV success is set in the 1960s, a time when skinny ties first emerged. Nowadays, men’s magazines such as Esquire and GQ have incorporated the fad, red carpets all over are showing the handsomest male celebrities sporting the look and designers are taking hints from the show for inspiration for vintage ties. For men that want to pull of such a look, keep in mind today’s narrow neckwear should have a contemporary style.

When to Wear Narrow Neckties:

Vintage ties and especially thin ties are a very sizzling fad because they can be used to dress up or dress down depending on the occasion and the personal preferences of the wearer. Men from young boys to businesspersons are donning a look that gives an immediate feel of cool.

For corporate executives, a patterned, tailored suit or a shirt with a pattern can be matched with solid or colored vintage neckties. Appear professional by selecting a tie that is a bit slimmer than normal, which will make an impression of boldness and power. Be sure the design is also not too flashy, which can make the outfit appear too busy.

For formal occasions a skinny tie matched up with a traditional black suit and a white button down shirt is a classical look. To appear casual, a thin tie can be matched with a cotton shirt and a vest, too. Roll up the sleeves on a long sleeved shirt or try short sleeves and wear a striped shirt and colorful skinny ties to make a carefree and comfortable look, which is ideal for young men.

Looking Stylish with Skinny Ties:

Although skinny ties look amazing, they are narrow which does not make them very suitable for larger men. Buff, men with muscles will look better with a tie of regular width. As well, the narrow tie look is more appropriate for younger men. To still achieve the look of the Mad Man TV show, men that are older or more built can wear neckwear which is slimmer although somewhat wider than the 2-inch ties usually worn as skinny ties.

Men can wear vintage neckties as well. Ties made of silk in pale blues, muted grays, browns and greens show off the vintage look that ruled during the rockabilly age. Certainly, skinny ties in plaid, with graphics, vibrant reds, purples and oranges may also be worn. When picking a bold tie do not forget that the livelier the tie is, the more neutral the suit should be, to avoid looking very busy.

Where to Shop for a Vintage Tie:

Thrift stores are an ideal source to find vintage ties; however for the vintage inspired effect; several fashion designers have produced designs inspired by Mad Men. Amongst them is fashion designer Michael Kors who not long ago designed an early 60s style line. Men's vintage neckties and narrow skinny ties can be bought on the internet, offered on auction websites and offered by high-end designers. A balance is important when sporting skinny ties, so make sure to keep a tie in balance with the clothes by assuring that the tie hits above the belt.
