Float off into dream land - literally - with the Magnetic Floating Bed available from Universe Architecture. The website assures us that the four cables affixed to the bed are purely for positioning purposes, the bed is only supported by "repulsive levitation in magnetism." To read more about the technology and the claim that this bed will still be floating thousands of years from now click here.
If you are not 100% comfortable sleeping on a floating platform but love the idea and principle behind this floating platform you can use the bed for:
- a dining table
- to display art or other objects
- a work of art all its own
The price tag associated with this bed is $1.53 million USD making the bed also known as the Million Dollar Bed. The bed floats a distance of 15.7 inches and can support weight up to 1980 pounds.
The Dutch designer Janjaap Ruijssenaars is a trained architect. His aim at the beginning of the project was to construct a piece of furniture or a building that defied gravity. He has done that.
Different Floating Beds
If you are thinking that sleeping next to a magnet so powerful doesn't sound like the right kind of bed for you - there are other options.
The floating bed is suspended by a serious of ropes that allow the bed to gently rock the occupant to sleep. The website explains that this is done by a pendulum motion that is more calming than a true back-and-forth motion that you get with a traditional hammock.
The floating bed can be used inside or outside. It comes in three different sizes (the measurement indicates the diameter of the bed):
- 6 feet $2795 USD
- 6 feet 6 inches $2995 USD
- 7 feet 4 inches $3195 USD
- 8 feet $3495 USD
