What is a Hookah?

A hookah is a water pipe that has either single or many stems.

The hookah is an Indian seventeeth-century invention as is sometimes referred to as narghile or a shisha and continues to this day to be a favourite form of smoking in the middle east, parts of Europe and Africa, including Morocco.

Hakin Abul Fath, an Arabic physician thought up the idea, because he wanted to decrease the bad effects of tobacco smoking.

A hookah is essentially a glass jar of water, joined by a tube or body to the dish at the top. The tobacco is placed in the dish and then covered with hot charcoal. By drawing smoke through the tube, which leads to the water jar, the hookha smoker inhales the aroma. The hot fumes are pulled down from the tobacco dish and the ensuant smoke is filtrated through the water before it is inhaled by the hookha smoker.

The tobacco usually inhaled through a hookah is different from that smoked in the average pipe. It is sometimes sweetened with honey, fruit, molasses, and aromatic oils.
