Before you set out to purchase a mail organizer, you have to ask yourself a few questions. For how many people will I need to sort mail? Do I want simple bins, or do I need a space for pens and envelopes? How much space do I have for one? Once you have a vision for what you need, it makes the search that much easier. Keep in mind that with the ever-expanding Internet, you are going to find yourself choosing from numerous vendors and will find a vast array of designs, colors, and functions.

There is now a very large selection of mail organizers. You can choose from elaborate designs of fine woods or opt for something more simple and efficient and made of either plastic or metal. A home mail organizer that includes a cell phone battery charging station is one of the best organizers and they can be purchased at fine retailers or by catalog. These particular models are great if you come home and want to keep your necessities all in one place. You can park your cell phone and charge up the battery while you sort your mail and keep it neatly organized. One station for everything can add much-needed simplicity to a very busy lifestyle.

Mail Organizer Designs

The smaller designs are about the size of a breadbox but will not serve your purposes if you are looking to sort out a larger than average amount of mail. For a big, busy household, you want to be able to sort mail for at least 3-4 people and therefore might want to invest in a unit that can be hung on a wall. A bin of engineered wood and hardwood veneers can cost as much as $60 each and might only have two slots, so invest in a few sturdy pieces depending on the size of your household. They are a worthy investment if you are looking to own them for a very long time and need to sort through varying sizes of correspondence without worrying about any serious wear and tear.

Some of the more exciting designs for mail organizers are vertical and have four bins, each with a label slot. Not only are these models efficient, but they can be made in different finishes. For example, if you want your organizer in your kitchen and all your cabinets are oak, you can have a wall mail organizer made out of oak to keep a consistent design in your home. They can be installed on walls without taking up a large amount of space.

Affordable Mail Organizers

A much simpler option is a plastic mail organizer that does not have to be as securely mounted as the wooden options. Some models allow you to add on more pockets if necessary and even have slots for holding pencils, pens, and envelopes. These are also vertical and can be mounted in your home office or where you are most likely to sort your mail. They are much lighter than the wooden organizers but often not as attractive. Still, if you are not looking to spend a large amount of money for this purpose, they are a reasonable solution. However, if used too heavily the plastic might crack and become unattractive. But if you know that you will need to shove thicker packages and envelopes into the slots, you might not want to go with hard plastic. In the long run, you will not be as satisfied as with stronger wooden organizers.

A smaller desk mail organizer fits well on tables, kitchen counters and of corse desks. They can sort enough mail for two to three people and come in attractive designs. You can find them in chrome if you would like to match against kitchen appliances or versatile wood finishes such as whitewash, espresso, or oak to accessorize a desk. The more functional designs will come with small drawers for you to keep writing utensils and slots for paper clips and other small desk supplies.
