Here are the list of some of the major groups of drugs and its alternative natural medicine.

  • Analeptic - a drug that stimulates the central nervous system.
  • Analgesic - a drug that relieves pain. Example: Analgesic, Aspirin.
  • Antiemetic - a drug used to suppress nausea, vomiting and motion sickness.
  • Anesthetic (general) - an agent that produces loss of consciousness.
  • Anesthetic (local) - a drug that causes loss of sensation in one part of the body.
  • Antacid - a drug that counteracts excessive stomach acid. An example is sodium bicarbonate (bicarbonate of soda).
  • Antiarthritic - a drug that relieves swelling of inflamed joints.
  • Antibiotic - a substance, derived primarily from living microorganisms, that inhibits or kills other microorganisms.
  • Anticonvulsant - a drug used to prevent convulsions, as those of epilepsy.
  • Antidepressant - a drug used to treat depression.
  • Antihistamine - a drug that counteracts the effects of histamine, a substance that can cause allergic reactions and respiratory congestion, as in hay fever and the common cold.
  • Antipyretic - a drug that reduces fever. Example is Aspirin
  • Antiseptic - a drug that stops the growth of microorganisms.

  • Antispasmodic - a drug that eases smooth muscle spasms, as in stomach ulcer or spastic colitis.
  • Antitoxin - a substance containing antibodies to counteract the poisons of a specific disease.
  • Astringent - a fluid used to externally to contract tissues, and reduce the flow of body fluids.
  • Diuretics - a drug that stimulates the flow of urine.
  • Hormone - a chemical substance, produced by glands or tissues, that controls various bodily functions. Hormones produced by animals or made synthetically are used in humans to supplement body hormones.
  • Hypnotic or Soporific - a drug that induces sleep.
  • Laxative or Cathartic - a substance that stimulates bowel movement.
  • Narcotic - a drug that relieves pain.
  • Relaxant - a drug that relaxes tense muscles.
  • Sedative - a drug that calms nervous excitement.
  • Stimulant - a drug that increases some kind of body activity. Example is Adrenaline, Amphetamines; Caffeine
  • Tranquilizer - a drug that reduce nervous and emotional tension.
  • Vasoconstrictor - a substance that narrows the blood vessels for relief from congestion, as in nasal passages.
