The Three-Times Rule

Yeah, I know: Because email doesn't (yet!) allow human expression, misunderstandings can occur. It doesn't have to be that way.

If you use email wisely, it can be the best personal or business friend you have. Here's why: Although in-person and phone conversations present definite upsides, email offers a chance for do-overs. In email, you can read over your remarks as many times as you wish before actually sending them.

It also gives you a chance to re-read what others have said to you. You might be shocked to discover how much, and how often, you misunderstand.

In the near future, I imagine, we'll be talking via hand-held videophones. In the meantime, take advantage of the edge email offers.

Try my three-times rule and see if it doesn't improve your communication skills immensely: Read every legitimate email you receive at least three times before responding. Read your answer at least three times before sending. You'll be on your way to becoming an ace communicator!
