So many people out there have a dream to make hip hop rap beats. I do.
Some want to become rich and famous and others just have a love for the hip hop culture. Either reason is OK by me.
Whichever describes you, making rap beats is not difficult with the right knowledge.
Not only is it a great creative outlet but it's a nice little money maker too. I can make rnough money just doing this part time to pay for my beat making habit many times over.
You need to know things about making rap beats like:
- What equipment is useful for making rap beats- There are so many avenues to go down. You can buy dedicated hardware workstations like the legendary MPC or Keyboard workstations like the Motif, Fantom or Triton. You could also choose to make your own beats using commercial software on your computer. Software like FL Studio (Fruity Loops), Reason or Cubase are popular choices.
- Where to get samples and sounds to use in your rap beats- In today's music industry it's important to sound current. To do this you need your sound choices (drums and instruments) to be appropriate for your rap beat making. The better your choice in sounds, the more commercially viable your beats will be. You also do not want to get ripped off paying too much for sounds you could get much cheaper or even free!
- How to use music theory when making rap beats- Just because rap beats use samples doesn't mean that a slight knowledge of music theory isn't helpful. You do not have to be a music professor, but it would be useful to know about how notes, chords and scales work to make your music sound good.
- What software is best for making rap beats- With so many options, you do not want to waste your money on something that doesn't work. Learn how to download demos of software and get step by step help using it.
- How to get music business contracts for selling your rap beats- Once you have made some rap beats, you might choose to sell them to rappers. A good beat can fetch the newbie beat maker at least $20 for a non-exclusive license. Non-Exclusive means you can sell the beat to others over and over. A well established, but small time beat maker can pull in hundreds per beat and a full time pro can pull in many thousands. Some pros like Timbaland and Dr. Dre have bragged about getting $250,000 per track!
- Start your own label? - It's easier than you think, but you need to do things correctly. A step by step guide is what you need to get the ball rolling. Why not be the master of domain while you do something as fun as making beats all day?
