Those who are creative (or just have a knack for art) have a lot options for making money these days because of the Internet. Everything is going digital so those who own a computer can do a number of things without investing in anything additional, well almost everyone. If you are a graphic designer, you will probably need a graphic tablet but they are not very expensive. Wacom produces many of these tablets and they offer tablets in various price ranges. Once you have your computer, your design skills and a basic Internet connection, you can start making money with web designing. There are many different ways that artists can use their skills, so that those who have weaker skills in one area, can still make money by applying their stronger skills to something else.

Web designers and programmers play different roles in creating and building websites.

Web Design vs Programming

Web design has been a booming profession since the Internet became majorly popular. Hundreds of thousands of new blogs and websites are created each day and everyone wants their piece of the web to look classy and unique. The only way for many website owners to do this is do it themselves or hire a web designer (this could be you.) It will be your job to create neat designs, logos and catchy interfaces for websites. Don’t worry; you do not have to know coding, someone else can do this. Many great web designers do not code (or cannot code very well.) The is the same for programmers (the people who do the coding). In fact, many programmers are looking for someone to do the design end of websites while they do the coding part. If you do not know any programmers and do not know how to write code, you can still create your design in a multi-layered format and send it off to whomever purchased it.

Finding a Job in Web Design

There are various ways to make money selling your designs and getting hired. One obvious way is to impress a big web development company and join them as a designer. That way you will have a steady but fixed income. There are some people who like freelancing more than being on someone’s payroll and if you are good with people and well disciplined, you too can start freelancing Online. There are many freelancing websites Online where you will find projects that you can bid on. Beware of scams though, and never give away your designs until you have received the money or it is held on your behalf by the website’s payment system.

Staying 'In the Know'

Web design can be a lucrative career for anyone with a creative flair and a good understanding of the Internet and what is popular when it comes to the way websites are designed. Novices learn soon, as the learning curve is not too steep. The real challenge lies in getting good at it and successfully marketing yourself in the industry. Top designers are paid eye-popping sums to come up with unique designs for huge websites. It is important to stay on top of what is popular. As with clothing, what's popular and trendy in web design changes very often. Those who are on top of the trends in web design are likely to be able to make more money than some guy who is still creating websites with a 1998 feel to them. Luckily, customers who are happy with their designs may come back in the future when the design is outdated. This is one of the reasons why it's important to treat customers well.

Creating a Portfolio

As always, the more you network, the more business you will get. Joining social networks for web designers are a good way to spread the word, find work, and especially learn more. By making samples of your work ahead of time, you'll have a portfolio you can show to others who would like to see what kind of designer you are. Also, remember, the better your work, the more you can get paid. Your portfolio is a show of your work, so a nice portfolio can make a or break your rate of pay.

I have designed a few websites and pulled together lots of blogs. Getting ongoing business in this type of work does require getting involved in networking and talking to people. Simply putting yourself on the Internet is not enough.
