In my forays researching how to make money online, one thing comes to the fore over and over again.

Making money online requires sustainability, and sustainability requires motivation.

This is no insignificant statement, and requires rereading. Without motivation you are unlikely to sustain the energy needed to develop something substantial, This is an important point because people are not fools, and if you want to make money online, that is, if you want others to part with their cash, then they have to be able to sense that you are genuinely passionate about the area you are claiming to be a specialist in.

For example, it has often occurred to me to try and sell electronics online. But the truth is that I don't care about electronics.

One thing I do care about, by contrast, is internet marketing. For this reason, My paltry attempts at advertising electronics products to be sold online have disappeared into cyberspace, whereas my blog on internet marketing is quite findable on Google, if you know where and how to look.

This illustrates an essential element of any kind of success. It is hard to sell anything if you do not know about it, and it is hard to know about it if you do not care about it, because knowing about something requires an investment of time.

And time invested is usually a function of level of motivation about that topic.
