Tips for Learning How to Manage your Time More Effectively
Plan Your Day– Do you know where you're headed in life but find it difficult getting there? Maybe all you need is better time management. Managing time requires you to get good at focusing your time and energy on the things that really matter. Start with a plan and set some goals today. Figure out the most important things you need to do and how you can get them done as soon as possible. Give planning and goal setting your full attention. Be sure to write your plan and goals down. Later, if things need to be changed, then go ahead and change them.
Be realistic when planning your day. Do not overload with too many projects that will rob you of your primary focus of managing time. Planning time into your day to sit quietly and reflect on any changes that could help you improve the quality of your day and ultimately your life is good management of time.
Accomplishing your goals is never easy but a workable plan is like a road map. It will show you how to manage your time and get you where you want to go.
Beat Procrastination – Procrastination is delaying something we’d rather not do, usually caused by feeling overwhelmed by the task or not knowing where to begin. Or we may be thinking we don’t have the right resources to get the job done.
Getting through a project is simple if it is something we enjoy. But what if it's not. In creep the thoughts that make us feel we are not in the mood to do it right now, or we tell ourselves we have more than enough time to get the task done and so we tend to procrastinate more than we should.
There are many reasons why we procrastinate. If you think about it procrastination is just a habit. We know, in order to break a bad habit, we must replace it with another good habit. Examination of the excuses we tend to use to keep us from accomplishing our goals is a pretty good habit to keep.
Understand when you start to put things off why you do that. Then decide to take active steps for correction. Anthony Robbins has been quoted to say “a real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided”.
As you examine yourself be very careful not to put yourself down. You will gain nothing by telling yourself you are lazy, or stupid, or you aren’t competent enough to do the job. Instead of a putdown, focus your attention on the positive things and how it will make you feel when you get the job done. Be sure to reward yourself in some way when the job is complete.
Remember that procrastination is the worst enemy of effective time management.

Organize your day - To successfully manage your time you must be organized. Begin by organizing your work area. Keep your desk uncluttered except for the things you need for the project at hand. The disorder of a cluttered work area takes up space that could be used for better purposes like managing your time.
Check this out for four steps that will get you the perfect office desk in just 15 minutes.
Visit the Army Wife and let her show you "5 Simple Ways to Organize Your Day".
Once you learn to stay organized, you will never again ask "where is it?". Don't you agree, that alone will save you much time.
Prioritize - Figure out what time of day you are most productive and are at your best. Are you a morning person? If so this is your peak time to work on your most important projects, urgent or not. Get rid of all distractions that gobble up your valuable time. When you allow distractions to become a priority, you sacrifice time management. Your focus should be on managing time throughout the course of your day. No checking emails or calling friends at peak time so you can really concentrate on those important tasks. Uninterrupted work time is one of your most precious assets when managing time.
Prioritize your projects 1 - 4 using the following formula used by time management coaches.
1 = The task is urgent and important. 2 = It's important but not urgent. 3 = It's urgent but not important. 4 = It's not urgent and not important.
Prioritizing your projects will help you work smarter, not harder and will give you greater return on time.
To be successful you need to know where your time is going. Keeping a time journal is very effective when learning to manage time. Write down everything you do. Monitor and update your journal throughout your day in 15 - 30 minute increments for 3 days to 2 weeks. Do not wait until the end of the day when most likely you will forget what you did. Keeping track of time will help you see where you are wasting it. With a good plan, small manageable goals, organization, and self-discipline to follow your plan you can make the most of your time and free up an extra two hours a day. You deserve it!

You're very welcome Lupo. Thanks for dropping by.
Hi Dottie!
Like you have pointed out, procrastination is an enemy and has to be defeated early.
Thanks for the tips! :)
Hi quicksand,
I for one need to hear that loud and clear that procrastination is the enemy.
There, I heard it again!
Dottie: These are helpful tips and reminders! My biggest fault is procrastination, but... I have been learning to take on chores and do a different task a few times a week, while attending to our business, or else the house would fall apart as we really are busy everyday, 7 days a week.
By the comments, I see procratination seems to affect many of us. LOL!
Hi VioletSun - Glad to hear you are getting better at juggling all your chores and keeping up with the business. It seems for me when my daughter came home from college for the summer everything shifted and I have to re-evaluate and set new goals and of course stop the procrastinating which is natural for everyone as long as it doesn't get out of control.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to come by and comment. It is always a pleasure to hear from you. Take care.
Nice reminders and love those pertinent time quotes. My greatest enemy--filling my time with lots to do and then not knowing what I'm doing. I think that is time-defeating too.
Sometimes, time becomes a conflict when desires take precedence over duty. Case in point--I rather go shopping than slave over an article, especially when it's a piece I rather not work on.
Hi Dottie1 Thank You so much for the work in your hub. I can use the procrastination help tip 4 sure. I always put the toughest task last, then the day and eve are over. Bless you friend
Thanks for these tips and reminder Dottie1. Procastination is usually my problem but I'm getting rid of it (slowly). That's why I appreciate this hub very much.
All the best!
Hi Angel Dottie, I love your hub. I am reminded to not go astray in the ways of time management: organize, prioritize, stop procrastinating and get some hours for myself. Come to think of it, all these tips was what helped me get through the hubchallenge. (reflective mood...hmmm...thinking of that incident LOL) Thank you for a very helpful hub! Thumbs up sis! :-)
Hi anglnwu, how are you? Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you loved the quotes. The following 2 quotes I found to have depth and insight that shook my attention:
Until we can manage time, we can manage nothing else.~Peter F. Drucker
You cannot kill time without injuring eternity.~Henry David Thoreau
I hear you skye2day on saving the toughest task for last and then the day is over. And then what's left hanging over our head in the morning? When that happens I just want to go back to bed, lol. Thanks for stopping in.
jill of all trades, slowly is a good way to get rid of that pesty procrastination. Glad you appreciated this hub. Good Luck!
Hi Angel Michelle, So that's how you got through the hubchallenge. I often wondered how those who had full time jobs could write so much. I'm not sure if you were on summer break when the hubchallenge started but even so I know you must have had much preparation going on for the start of a new school year. It is good to know you have all of these important time management skills because they will continue to serve you well. Thanks for coming by to comment.
I think the hardest part is not getting side-tracked. I write a list and then find I am doing something not on the list. That's where my time disappears.
Thanks for a good hub.
A very good point you make, 2patricias, getting side-tracked, it happens all the time. We need to be aware of that too if we want to stay on track to meet our goals. Thank you for stopping by. I appreciate your comment.
Thumbs up Dottie, I recently had to work on plotting my schedule and made sure I really acted on them. Writing them done is the easy part. It's teh execution that becomes the challenge. I pray you continue your path to peace and joy in knowing you are special and that all is well. Lovelots. Hugs:)
Hi ya Daisy my friend, it's always good to hear from you. I have watched you on hubpages execute many of your goals. You have a way of making learning seem so easy and fun. Keep up the good work. Thanks for coming by, for the prayer and the thumbs up. Love you lots, too! :)
Thats awesome. In my case the evil which I fight everyday is 'Procrastination'. Thx very much for an inspirational hub. This came as a reminder to me.
You hit the nail on the head! Thanks!
It's a Saturday and I'm planning to do some hubbing and maybe a bit of writing and making sure to have time to rest and play. Come join us Angel Dottie! LOL Hugs...
I'm glad it helped anjalichugh. And thanks for stopping by to comment.
Thanks Bali99. I deleted one of your posts since it was a double. Hope you don't mind, :)
Hi Michelle...it's Saturday here too (1:00 a.m.) Thanks for the invite. I would love to come join you as soon as I get some sleep..LOL Hugs... Glad to hear you are taking time for rest today, I know you've been pretty busy with school and all (hate to cut out but phone rang and Tracey is waiting for me to pick her up...Yup that's why I'm up so late! Fast food joints close at midnight then employees have cleanup. Gotta run Sis. See ya later!
Just what I have just needed! Even if I just stayed home, I still need an effective time management, huh tough one especially with hubpages around haha! But I have managed to let it rest for a while. Hurray! I have just cured my HP addiction! lol!
Good for you Charia and ya know what, I've made the exact same decision just 2 days ago. I'm at home now with eyes open for new opportunity and so can you guess why I have written this hub, yup, in need of effective time management. Don't we all! Thanks for stopping by. I love your comments.
Dottie another great hub. Time management? whats that? You do as much as you can crammed into a day (even if its got a lot to do with hubs)...Just kidding.
It took a lot of planning to finally get all my timing set up just right. I was used to starting at my tailor shop 5:30am everyday and not quiting till 7:00pm or later and still taking the handsewing home so when I had the shop no more all of a sudden I had all these hours of nothing in front of me...what to do with them? For months I couldn't believe days went by and I had nothing to show for them but I was busy and still no concrete visible results. I was doing everything and nothing. Then I finally realized that I still needed the regiment of work. Now I go out to the barn feed the menagerie then write for 5 hours go back out to the barn and garden for an hour or two. Then I sew, knit or do chores around the house, go feed the menagerie again, hub, watch a bit of TV and do the same thing all over the next day and the next. Time managment is the key as I get a lot done now .
Hope you're well, great hub as always
kindest regards Zsuzsy
thank you, very informative hub!
I'm pretty good at this, but I guess I could do better
I am well Zsuzsy Bee and hope that you are too. Thanks for stopping by and sharing how you have put your time into place with a lot of planning after much hard work of busyness and no desireable results. Boy I see you are one busy lady now and sounds like you are enjoying yourself too. Way to go!

~Wes
Hi wjames, glad you enjoyed the hub and thanks for passing by, it's always nice to see a new face. Will stop by to check out your hubs.
Thanks for this "timely" hub. I was a focused girl and able to accomplish so many tasks. But ever since marriage I am for ever trying to find time. There are so many sudden unknown challenges that keep coming up on a daily basis that I am always left behind doing catch up. Thumbs up for a great hub.
Thank you countrywomen. I feel for you! I actually wrote this hub because I had to find out where my time was going because I too was always catching up.
I have since made a "daily list". It is divided into 3 columns, 1st column labelled "To Do List/Errands", 2nd column labelled Mail & Phone, and 3rd column is "Ongoing" which is for things I do daily. One of those things I do every day now is that "Time management affirmation" that is posted above in the hub. Every day I am fine tuning this list and will do so until it is to my satisfaction. This has helped me tremendously. I never thought I would be living from a list but if it helps me to manage my time better than to me it is worth it!
Within the last 3 weeks, I had an aunt who died and who lived in another state, I had a friend whose mother-in-law died and this week my father-in-law in the hospital. Two days ago I was overwhelmed. Yesterday and today are quiet again and am just starting to feel I am catching up. Sometimes we just have to go with the flow!
Thanks for stopping by countrywomen. I appreciate your visit and comments. May your marriage stay blessed as you try to find more time.
Time management is equally important for all be it student, professional, house wife or a businessman. The tips that you have shared here with us all is great indeed. Thanks for the same!
Excellent advice. It is so easy to get distracted and stray from your original tasks when working - especially on the computer.
Thank you packerpack and Patti Ann. Wouldn't it be great if we were all masters of time! I appreciate you both stopping by and sharing your thoughts.
Nice tips.
Thank you guidebaba.
Dottie1 These are helpful and nice tips. How are you long time u did not visit my hub
Hi Lgali, thanks for coming by. I'll be over for a visit.
Hi Dottie, I am on a tour of your hubs just to check what I have missed! :)
Sweet, I appreciate that. I'll have to come by and take a tour of your hubs soon too. I'd love to do that now but I've been asked to shut off computer because people here trying to sleep. I must be respectful, I think, ya I better be! LOL
Hi Dottie,
I'm so glad I found this hub! I really need these ideas. My time really seems to slip away from me, and before I know it the day is over! I read the part about having a daily plan with interest. I used to do that and found it to work well for me. Thanks for the reminder. I will start making a daily plan again, and I will remember to not cram it so full that I can't possibly finish it all. I'm bookmarking this hub to read over and over again. Great job!
Good point DoodleLyn, not to cram so much in that you can't finish. That's been my problem. Thanks for your comments.
couldnt agree more!
Thanks for stopping by.
Hi Dottie, Placing more value on my time is something that I am working on so I appreciate the valuable tips that you shared.
Good luck Tonie with your time management. I'm happy you found the tips valuable. Thanks for coming by and commenting.
Hi Dottie,
I love this hub! I am horrible with my time management lately and always end up cramming everything that needs to be done into 1 or 2 days that drives me crazy! I bookmarked this page to come back to. Thanks~
Hi Info Help. Time does have a way of creeping up on us and then CRAM, lol. Thanks for passing through and commenting.
Organization is definitely key to planning our days. I need to get better about it. Also, thanks for sharing your hygienists stories as sometimes I feel like I am the only one who experienced those things lol.
Organization I think is just a continuous process. If you don't stay on top of it things can quickly get out of control. Thanks SweetiePie for your visit and comments. Take care.
very nice hub I needs all theses tips
Thanks for stopping by Lgali, nice to see you and hope these tips will help you.
