Spend Some Time Making Your Writing Better.
Welcome to Hubpages.com. Whether you're a hobby blogger or professional writer I feel you will have a great and rewarding experience on this online community. That being said let me also caution you that what you take away from your time here will directly reflect what you put into it. Writing, while definitely a passion for many of us is also a career and job for just as many. To succeed in this field requires not only effort, but determination, and a clear plan. Before beginning your journey here, take a moment to get clear on what you hope to accomplish by joining Hubpages. Stumbling around on notions and underdeveloped goals will lead to wasted time and frustration. Be honest with yourself and your desires on this issue. Money can be made on this site like any other but it will not happen by itself or overnight.
Hubpages Success Stories
You do not have to look far to find examples of authors and writers who have turned this site into an income stream. The person earnestly seeking to profit by their time here would do well to read the works and hubs by authors such as.
- Darkside
- Mark Knowles
- Shirley Anderson
- James A. Watkins
These are just four out of hundreds. There are numerous categories and subjects dealing with success and writing on hubpages. I suggest you dedicate some serious time to reading over the articles found there. Study them and make an effort to internalize what you read. Making money online is not hard but there are certain ways to go about doing it. Do not waste your time trying to re-invent the wheel when others have already done the groundwork for you. More importantly once you read what they do, don't dismiss it out of hand until after you have tried it and given it time to work. Many people will complain about not seeing a payoff but on closer examination it is obvious that they refuse to practice even the most basic of techniques and tips given to them by the scores of experienced writers on this site.
There is No Substitute for Quality
Everyday my email inbox is filled with notifications from Hubpages indicating new articles being published by some of my favorite writers. Unfortunately this is becoming like spam. I am often amazed at how some writers are managing ten Hubs a day, until I read them that is, and discover that they are filled with spelling and grammatical mistakes that are simply inexcusable. In this modern age of spell-checkers, and editing there just is no good reason to publish any article without taking a few minutes to proof-read your own work, or better yet allow someone else to. Flooding your portfolio with hundreds of poorly prepared and badly thought out pieces will not help your career at all, and will not make you money. The author that is published is the one who can present quality work again and again.
Most of the time I simply delete these notifications from my email without reading or commenting on the article. The reason is simple, the author has demonstrated hundreds of times now the inability to edit their own work or even a desire to. Despite repeated comments and suggestions by their readers they just will not take the time to go over their own work. People like to read quality stuff, that flows and is not difficult to follow. More importantly most readers are not the imbeciles that some authors would assume and presenting work that is only intelligible to a fifth grader is insulting and degrading to them. The authors that are successful on this site write quality work, that has been carefully prepared, and edited. Often returning to their articles many times to constantly optimize and tweak them.
Commercial Writing
While it is true that you can make money doing what you love there are also common sense rules to any undertaking. I love to write, and I came here to find a way to make money doing it. However I have quickly come to understand that in order to do that I will have to write about what people want to read. Writing of this nature is dependent on advertisers and traffic to make its profits. No traffic, no money. It's pretty simple. If you consistently churn out articles about information and topics a majority of people are not searching for you will not make money on sites such as Hubpages. Some may call this selling out, and those same individuals will be found in the forums complaining and crying unfair.
Many writers and successful authors will tell you the same story. They all got their start writing about things they did not necessarily have a passion for, but they wrote quality stuff anyway, taking time to put out the best work possible. Once you break into the show and are drawing a salary then start dedicating your writing to what interest you the most. Now do not confuse this advice with thinking you can't write about what you want and make money doing it. If your passion is making money starting online businesses then you will definitely have an audience. If for example your passions lies in the mating habits of Brazilian snails then this may not be the place to write about it. Remember programs like Adsense are commercial enterprises. The keyword being commercial. You need to focus on subjects, ideas, and trends in the media and community as a whole. Do your research and you will be rewarded.
What Sells, and What People are Searching For
The following applies to those seeking to make a profit from ad clicks and impressions on their hubs. Those of you who have come to Hubpages to explore your creative writing talents, will most likely not benefit much from this article. Truthfully most people want to know how to do something, or find answers to problems. While reading a good story is entertaining its also just a temporary escape from reality. In my experience online, over the past two years I have found that outside of books, and traditional publications, creative writing just does not do good in this type of format.
We are entering the holiday season. This is always a time of year when people are buying and looking for new gifts, ideas, and fun things to do. Once you realize this you are already on the right path. The public has needs and if you can meet those needs then the public will come to you. What do they need you might ask? Well lets look around at the Hubpages Topics, and Forums. Here are whole crowds of people more then willing to tell you what they want and need. Just look at the titles of hubs. What are people looking for? People today are basically the same. They want money, love, and happiness. Those three things come in many forms and avenues. Recognize this now, and take advantage of it. Be careful though not to concentrate to much on internal traffic, but on content that will appeal to a broad audience outside of Hubpages as this is where your ad clicks will come from.
You could write about weight loss, dating, making money turning your hobby into a book, or low-cost Christmas Gifts. Look at the calender what is coming up soon? Think about this now and get a hub out beforehand so that by the time the holidays hit, your article will have already had time to develop a following thus placing it high on the search results. What do you know how to do that people want to know? Where have you gone that others will visit and enjoy? What have you purchased that is popular and sought after? All these questions are just the beginning. You have to research your articles and make an effort to answer the most basic of human questions and fill that need, to generate more traffic and interest. Look at your own situation, what would you like to know about to help yourself grow or be happy?
There is a Method to the Madness.
Success on any writing site does not happen by accident. Though good writers may make it seem effortless, I assure you each one has spent incredible amounts of time and thought on perfecting their work. It is a process that is always continuing. Even the greatest authors and writers are constantly searching for better ways to do things and easier ways to profit by them. In this search though they never forget the basics and they always observe them. Quality, content, edited work, popular subjects, and fresh presentations are the key to money on this site. The time you spend to put forth a great article will pay off in the months ahead. Never forget that your articles, and profile may be the stepping stone to success you are looking for, Sloppy, hastily done pages without rhyme or reason are the hallmark of bad writers and lazy personalities. Publishers invest in writers and they expect a return. Show them that you are a person that can be depended on to deliver quality work over and over again.

I am fortunate to also have a few friends who write books. Though they concentrate more on publishing I have used their tips to change my own hubs around. I do not spend alot of time on Hubpages these days as i am concentrating more on finishing my two book projects so they can be published and sold. I constantly hear people talk about working on books for years, when most of the successful writers I have met are turning out finished product about every 9 to 10 months. I think its an issue of focus.
I could not have written this hub better myself, Scott! Great job on touching on so many facets of the hubbing experience. Practice does make perfect and good quality and original content here goes a long, long way. Thank you for sharing this. I hope that many of us struggling here will take note of this hub and follow your advice.
Thank you Dohn I am always glad when you stop by and look forward to your hubs in my mailbox, you are a great writer and an even better friend.
Well I would like to not get flagged anymore. That might make mine better. I tried fixing a Hub I had and it still came back flagged. I need to send the Hubpages Team a new email I still haven't heard back. I thought I was helping fellow hubbers but, google and hubpages don't like paid survey sites even if they are valid and do well.
Excellent Hub, Scott. This is very well put and concise. As a newbie to HubPages, I joined to try to make a little extra scratch being as that I am unemployed.
There are some valid complaints being made about the quality concerns, but you nailed it when saying that new hubbers should spend their initial time here reading about how to make quality hubs. At the moment, I am trying to push myself to do the 30 hubs in 30 days although I am not officially joining the challenge. When I am done with this, I plan to go back and optimize my hubs, correct mistakes, add more in-depth research, just overall improve what I have out there. Then, maybe I will have time for some creative writing endeavors.
The hubbers in the forums doing the biggest whining sound like they would be happier with complete control. I say they should just make it a point to contact the author of the hub they have a problem with if they think they can help. We are responsible for our work, and the community can help make everyone's work better. You're making an excellent contribution to quality with this hub.
While I have often heard it put that this is a community and should take it upon ourselves to flag hubs and "police" said community, I came here to help myself and work on my own writing.
If you can't be helpful to people and seek only to run someone down and belittle them maybe the problem lies in you not someone's work. If you see a problem that violates a rule, leave a comment or tell the author, beyond that concentrate on making your own work better. Maybe, and its just a big maybe: If we would all spend more time trying to improve our own lives and work instead of looking for something to bitch about then this community as a whole would improve, but as it is people really aren't interested in that by and large they want to worship their own egos and point out how superior they are.
I see alot of excuses lately as to why traffic to the site is dropping and falling off, and I see alot of finger pointing. The real truth is people are wondering why their own hubs are doing badly and the only one to blame is themselves. Real successes rely on outside traffic not internal visitors to hubpages so focus on that. Hubpages will take care of itself or not.
Very concise and informative hub. I would, however, like to add a couple of names more to your list of 4 hubbers. Those would be Compu-Smart and Jimmythejock.
I'm pretty new to this so this is an interesting perspective. I 100% agree that taking time to perfect and then market quality hubs is better than knocking them out on a production line.
Scott just want to wish you the best with your books. This hub is awesome as most of yours are. I generally read them and rate but don't leave too many comments. I have been following the comments in the forums and learned a lot of what not to do and a whole lot more on what to do. Thanks for sharing this.
Once again, you've amazed me with your wonderful writing, this means of course you are now offically guru to me!
Thank you Rebecca, but I would choose a better guru, as wonderful writing is not the key to success on Hubpages, just popular writing and opinions, and I am afraid my views on God have already precluded me from that club.
Another well written article Scott. I generally take the time to read your hubs because, unlike others, you don't write 10 a day, and they are all well done. Your comments about this very thing are proven with your own hubs.
A good read, and a good reminder that quality counts.
Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to write this Scott, really am lucky I stumbled on this - was extremely helpful and I have considered many of your important points to help me get started. Oh by the way, I caught a small error: "People today are basically the same. they want money, love, and happiness." Capitalize "they", I know - insignificant, but an article like this deserves to be perfect in every way =]. Again Scott, thank you and continue your great work.
Great hub, Scott. I agree - as a retired English and writing teacher, blatant errors are my pet peeve! Sure, we all make a little mistake or typo sometimes, but you know what I mean. Now, if people will just follow your advice...
This is a very informative hub and the first of your hubs that I have read. Thank you for the suggestion of following the calendar when choosing topics. I've been on Hubpages for 3 months and my topics have been all over the place. I'm heading over to your profile to read some more of your hubs.
Improving one's work and writing quality articles goes a long way. Thank you for writing this very helpful hub. :)
Scott
This is a Great hub filled with important information. I really enjoyed your comment, "let me also caution you that what you take away from your time here will directly reflect what you put into it". That may be what some of us are seeking, a means to earn in proportion to our efforts.
Thanks for the insight into successful hubbing.
This is a right fine article, Scott. And imagine my surprise to see my name mentioned! Thank you very much for this honor. Your advice is sound.
Hey James thanks for stopping by. You've been busy lately. I've been reading your history articles and am very impressed.
Informative, and as far as I can see correct. Good stuff. Thanks
Thank you. :-)
Thank you, Scott, am I lucky to have discovered you. This hub is so helpful and gives so much information. English is my second language and I have to make sure as much as I can. Could Hub have a grammar checking, like they have a spell checking or do they have one and I have not discovered it? It would help me so much and I like to make sure to be perfect as much as possible. Thank you for writing this hub.
@Hello, most computers have a grammar checker. the Idea is to type your hub on a program like Microsoft office, or word then cut and paste it onto the text capsule of your new Hub. That's what I've begun doing and it has made the whole process easier for me.
Writing is extremely hard work. It's hard to sustain without passion

You are certainly right about it being a "... a process that is always continuing." I recently read a book by a man I just happened across on myspace years ago when I first signed up there. I was adding people who were "writers", little did I know at the time that he actually was what I called a "Real" writer and had published several books. This latest one that I read was so intriguing that I wrote to him to talk about the book in a little further detail with him. (He and I have chatted quite a bit over the years so I knew he would answer) -- anyway, he said exactly what you have said in this hub! Basically, that he wrote what needed to be wrote (what people wanted to read about), then he perfected his skills and got better at quality, then he worked and invested time and finally he kept it fresh and continually grows with it.
I always enjoy your hubs Scott, :) Thanks.
