Make Your Own Beauty Products
59Home Made Beauty Products
Have you ever noticed the high price of beauty products? Of course you have! Now high price is something I can understand if the ingredients come from deep sea plant life that can only be harvested in small quantities or from the jungles of Madagascar. However I am amazed at department store prices of products one could easily make at home.
My first attempt at making At-Home beauty products came after purchasing a brown sugar scrub from a "fresh" new company. It was 55$! I got home and realized... this is made from ingredients I already have in my kitchen or bathroom cupboards! It certainly could not be 55$ to make. Even if I chose the highest quality, organic products, it would not cost this much to replicate. So the experimentation began.
Once my purchased scrub was gone I hijacked the empty container just to "stick it to the man" and put MY OWN formula in this ideal sized jar. Using organic brown sugar purchased from Whole Foods and combinations of olive oil, grapeseed oil and natural essential oils for fragrance and medicinal properties; I had a very amazing scrub at a minimal cost! I will attach some recipe suggestions below.
I will mention more in later hubs the amazing properties of different essential oils. It may be of interest for you to go find a book on the topic. Many home remedies can be made for health and beauty. Be careful however! Many natural ingredients can be very powerful so research before you combine!
Sugar Buns At-Home Sugar Scrub
- Fill a 16 oz jar with extra fine brown sugar. You can buy this in bulk at a healthfood store like Whole Foods.
- Pour enough oil into the jar to soak the sugar and slightly cover it. Your base oils can be olive oil, squalene (finely processed olive oil with a smaller molecule for beauty delivery), sweet almond oil, sesame oil, grape seed oil or any combination there of. Experiment!
- Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils (therapeutic grade and organic if possible) for aromatherapeutic and health benefits*. Suggestions:
- Grapefruit oil - anti-cellulite and lifts the spirits
- Lavender - calming and soothing to the skin
- Peppermint - invigorating and a natural antiseptic and decongestant
- Neroli oil - calming, soothing and invokes joy
- Rose - moisturizing and antidepressent
Enjoy!!
*Note: Use ONLY 2 to 3 drops of each essential oil if you are combining many as too much can be irritating to the skin especially anything in the citrus family. A good rule of thumb is about 30 drops total per 1 oz of base oil. Be cautious until you're an expert!

Melissa you rock!
I too have noticed that beauty products are really high priced and had that "why don't I make my own" moment. Unfortunately I did not have the motivation to actually do it...until now. Thanks!
