Uninstall programs on your machine:
Having programs on the computer which take up a lot of hard drive space, can have an effect on the way you computer runs in general. A good idea would be to remove these unwanted, no longer used programs.
The easiest way to do this is from Control Panel this can be found under the start button in Windows.
Windows XP - Add or Remove Programs
Windows Vista - Programs and Features
Simply select the programs you wish to remove and press the "uninstall" button. Its suprising how many unwanted programs end up in this list. Get rid of the ones you dont use.

Run a Disk Derfragment on the Main Hard Drive
By Defragmenting the hard drive Windows can move the files on the disk to more managable locations. This will breathe more life into the computer. To perform a system defragment see below.
Click on the Start Button > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.
Select your main hard drive which windows is installed on, and click on the Defragment button.
Note: This may take a little while, so be sure to have enough time to let this finish. The more often this is done, the less time it will take.

Remove Start Up Programs
When your computer boots up, so do many other programs with it! Choosing which programs to start on boot can potentially save minutes on windows start up.
There are many ways to do this, but in my opinion the easiest way to do this is to use a program which has been impemented to help with this issue.
The best free program you can use to do this is called CCleaner. It is a brilliant free software package which allows you to perform numerous tasks to clean your hard drive.
The software is available at the following link:
There may be a bit of confusion about this software being free. The site will ask you to donate but this does not mean you are unable to download it for free.
Within this program, navigate to Tools then select Startup. The programs listed will be ones started on windows boot. Remove unwanted startup programs from your list.
WARNING: If you are unaware of what the program you are removing is, leave it alone. You are welcome to ask me if you are unsure of any of the programs listed here. Leave a comment and I will get back to you.
Using the Cleaner tool on this software is also a good idea, and relatively safe 99% of the time.

Thanks for reminding me, I haven't 'defragmented' in a while.
Congrats on being a hubnuggeteer.
Great hub

Congrats on being a hubnugget nominee! Very informative hub. I have a Mac, as do many others. Perhaps you can do one on speeding up a slow Mac?
Well, two ways didn't cost me a penny, your third way is only free if you buy the program first. I would have liked to have read about the way to clean up your start-up programs without the need to buy yet another program. Good hub, though.
Lily Rose, that is incorrect. CCleaner is free, they just ask for donations to help the software along. This does not prevent you from downloading the software free of charge, look again. Maybe I should have mentioned this in the HUB.
I owe you an apology - I read right over the word free, as I thought you were referring to the software in the amazon capsule that's right there - my bad! I'll check out the free download - thanks for the clarification. I also appreciate the reminder to defrag - I often forget and when I get around to it, it takes forever!
Apology accepted, and not needed! I just want to help people out, thanks for pointing out a flaw in my hub, I will be more careful in the future.
Regards,
Richard.
