Here's the information you need to have a successful garage sale...
In today's age of information, everyone seemingly knows host and hold a garage sale. Yet if this is so, why is it that some people who only gross about $120 while others constantly makes $1,000 or more from garage sales? Choose almost any city or town in the nation and cruise through any middle class neighborhood or residential area on a weekend. You're sure to spot at least 6 garage sales. And what's being sold at these garages sales? It's the accumulated "junk" that many people no longer use or want anymore.
It's not hard to hold a successful garage sale. All it really takes is your valuable time and energy, and a few selling tactics. But to be really profitable, it's best that you know how to exercise careful planning. First, let's look at the background of the event. Everyone accumulates items that other people are searching for during their time on Earth.
Begin by recording inventory of everything that "take up space" around your home. Decide which items you don't want, and make a list of these things. These are the items you're going to sell. Remember that many garages sale have items of merchandise that were purchased on impulse, and later found to not be of beneficial value.
Its human nature that we discover that we don't like or have a use for items purchased. We tend to "outgrow," in size or taste, articles that we once wanted. You'll find that merchandise offered at garages sales are often gifts that have been given to the seller, but not wanted. In other words, before you stage your first garage sale, take some time to browse through all the garages sales you can find.
Here's a problem, most people just don't have the time or energy to sort out all the items taking up space around their homes to stage a garage sale. Believe it or not, many people really don't know how to hold a garage sale. This in turn creates the effect that a lot of people feel hosting a garage sale is just too much work. This is where you can fit in. Your business will be an ongoing garage sale of items donated and collected from t people who lack the initiative to have garages sales of their own. In other words, you'll be a "liquidator for people's junk," from super garages sales that you promote. However, don't forget to stow away dogs, cats, or other animals. This scares your valuable customers away!
Begin your garage sale by cleaning out your own attic, closets, and basement or garage. Speak with your relatives and friends and let them know what you're doing. Don't forget to ask for donations of unwanted items. It's here that you'll get your first experience in negotiating, and you'll usually get responsive cooperation. You'll find people letting you know if they don't have a use for a specific item, but for sentimental reasons hung on to it.
Once you have a little bit of experience, start advertising in the newspaper. Let people know that you host garages sales. It's best that the women of the house handle the garage sale itself. In other words, let a woman be the one who greets potential customers and show them around. If it's a woman hosting the garage sale, then make arrangements for another woman to "watch over the store" while the first one is digging up more items for display and sale. And if it's a really big sale, a second or third person is very useful in helping out selling, and keeps an eye on things.
The advertising business is really quite simple, and shouldn't cost you very much. Check your area newspapers and select one that lists the most ads for garage sales. Don't concern yourself too much with competition from other ads. There are people who frequent many garage sales within a 3-to-5 mile radius of their homes.
You should run a small classified ad in the newspaper of your choice for about three days in advance, and continue running the ad up to the day of your sale. Once you're operating on a regular schedule, you'll want to change your ad content and style of your advertising. However, when starting, stick with small classified ads that announce the fact that you're holding a garage sale. An example of an ad might read:
"BIG GARAGE SALE! Loads of interesting items. Through Saturday, June 15th. Don't forget to include the address.
To get ideas on how to write compelling ads, read through your newspapers for a week or two. Cut out all the garage sale ads you find impressive. Paste them up onto a piece of paper. Always remember that in order to increase your profits in any business, you must increase your advertising. You'll find that the greatest reason for a garage sale not turning a profit is because the lack of promotion and advertising used to publicize it.
You should also have sign to display in front of your house when your garage sale happening. The purpose of course, is to call attention to the fact that you are holding a garage sale and are open for business. This will pull in your neighbors, if you haven't already informed them, and attract people who're driving by. These signs are also sometimes set out at key traffic intersections not far from the site of the garage sale. They are normally posted on telephone or utility poles. These will attract attention, and point the way to where the garage sale is located. Be sure to check your local laws to be sure that this sort of advertising is permitted.
By all means, research and use all the free bulletin boards posted in your area. It's better, and usually equates to more profit by taking the time to make up a flyer or circular you can use to post on these bulletin boards. Look throughout your newspaper for interesting illustrations, graphics and pictures. Then by using a little bit of creativity and hard work, make up an 8 1/2 by 11 poster announcement of your sale. When you have it finished, then take it to a local print shop and have them print up 50 or 100 for you.
If you make this circular/poster up with longevity in mind, you can use it over and over again by simply by changing the date. Your signs will have to be effective, but remember to keep them to the point. Don't try to cut corners on the creation your sign. Signs illustrating and pointing the way to your garage sale should be placed at every intersection within a one-mile radius of the place where you plan on holding the garage sale. The most important thing is to let people know that you're in the business of holding a garage sale.
