Costume Tips for Halloween or Any Time

Get ready early and you'll have more fun.
I've always loved playing dress-up and I could see no reason to stop just because I grew up. I've been making costumes as long as I can remember. It seems there is always something new to make a costume for, whether it's an upcoming play, a dance recital, a biker theme party, or good ole Halloween.
I know what you are thinking: its barely autumn and I'm already talking about Halloween.
But for those of us that like to make costumes and not settle for the store bought cheapies, or worse, paying through the nose in seasonal costume shops, starting early is the best way to have more fun and less stress.
First of all, for those with growing children, now is the time to get out those costumes you had hoped to use again. You may find they no longer fit, or your child is now old enough to pitch a fit with what was the perfect costume last year.
It's good to set a budget on just how much you are willing to spend. If you are going for a 'one time use' costume, you will not want to spend nearly as much as the person that plans to wear that costume to every Renaissance faire, pirate fest and parade for the next five years.
It's helpful if your family can agree on a theme. I went to a great party where the whole family dressed as characters from the Addams Family.
It becomes more complicated if your son wants to be a robot from the future and your daughter wants to be a witch and your husband wants to be Kid Rock.
If you've never sewn in your life, pick one of the basic costumes based on leotard and tights. Then you can get away with a simple cape, a paper mask or some costume accessories. Some of the many costumes that rely on a leotard and tights combo include ballet dancer, bee, cat, dog, lion, unicorn, saloon girl, disco dancer, or circus performer. If you have a kid that's into sports they may be willing to wear their football uniform, soccer outfit or cheerleader uniform.
Some things go with everything. For example a pair of baggy black sweatpants can go for pirate, peasant, jogger, sultan, or cat burglar.
Be sure to raid the thrift store. You may find something in the costume section, but also look for military and uniform jackets in the men's wear. There are usually plenty of auto mechanic shirts and suspenders and hats that will add zip to your costume.
And don't forget the military surplus store. The great thing about buying a real hat is you can still wear it after the candy is all gone.
Decide if you want an obvious costume or one they have to guess at. Small children get upset if they are dressed like a bunny and someone says "What a cute cat." If you choose to dress like Dr. Who, some people will get it and some won't.
Consider face painting as an alternative to wearing a mask. It's less sweaty, and doesn't impair your vision. Use water based face paints for easy clean up.
More tips:
Be willing to spend more money on the focal point of your costume, and less on things that won't be seen. An elaborate pirate coat may be expensive, but you'll get a lot more oohs and ahs. They probably won't even notice your black sweats underneath.
Be ready to take religious preferences into consideration. Not everyone may think it's hysterical to dress your 4 year old like the devil even if he is a little monster.
Also keep in mind whether you are wearing the costume indoors or out or both. If you need a cover-up, it's much better to plan ahead and make one that goes with the costume. For example your Robin Hood will look better with a cloak than with his father's leather jacket. To stay warm you can also wear two pairs of tights or add gloves to the costume, or put a sweater under the rest of the costume. Cover your head to say warm. That's where we lose the most body heat. Also, a wig will keep you warm (maybe too warm if the costume parade is at noon on Main St).
Halloween is a grand time for most of us. But it can be a nightmare if you wait until the day before to make your costume. Get everything ready and have a dress rehearsal a week ahead. That way you still have time to fix any problems.
Remember, safety first. You might want to add some glow strips to shoes and candy buckets and get some flashlights.
Happy Trick-or-Treating.

How to make your Halloween costume sexier
1. Show more skin
2. Some costumes are inherently sexy such as a vampire, a nurse, or a barbarian.
3. Wear a costume with a corset or a bustier or fishnets as part of the design.
4. Remember you can add padding for more 'stuff' like fannies or cleavage.
5. Long hair is sexy. Big hair is sexy. Figure out how to get some.
6. Add accessories like velvet gloves or swanky hats.
7. High heels, high heels, boots, high heels.
8. Thigh hi's, garter belts, thongs, etc.
9. Accessorize with whips, handcuffs, chains, or other kinky items.
10. Sweet and innocent can be sexy too. See the angel photo above.
9. Lingerie shops have sexy costumes at Halloween. Try to pick something that won't disintegrate with one wearing.
10. Mysterious peek-a-boo clothing is sexy too, and warmer on cold windy nights. Think capes with hoods and gowns with long circular or pointed sleeves.

- I Want To Make Some Fascinators
I want to make some fascinators and I found a tutorial here: http://corvustristis.livejournal.com/3205.html I prefer sewing things together rather than gluing them but other than that, the directions seem easy enough to follow. I'm making a green lace one right now, which I started before I read the tutorial. - Do you sew?
How did you get into it? How long have you been sewing? Do you sew mostly for yourself or others? Do you sew every day clothing or costumes or what? How did you get into it?
