I Feel Ripped Off By Manufacturers Who Claim to Make Good Deodorants!

What exactyl makes the best deodorant?

Whatever has happened to the effectiveness of deodorants and anti-perspirants these days. Who reduced the 24 hr ,long lasting freshness, if it ever existed .They simply are not doing what they claim to be able to do. Have the companies reduced ,or replaced certain ingredients necessary to combat body odor effectively. I think they have.

Deodorants Not Working

Deodorants don't do what they are supposed to do anymore, and that is ,banish or diminish body odor!! What is with that?

Each new one I try ,with increased hope and excitement, my efforts are quickly dashed and my annoyance increases ,no doubt increasing stress levels to further add too my already stinky problem is not helping my problem.

OK so is my choice limited ,is that the problem?, certainly not. I can choose from several varieties all claiming to pamper ,soothe my most secret delicate parts, and most of all sanitise and perfume me ( if I want) for 24 hr protection, Not sure why I would need underarm protection for 24 hrs, unless I am taking part in a one day international cricket match or working in a job that required my arms to be in a bat-like position for long periods of time. No give me 12hrs of genuine protection and cut the crap for the other 12 and I'm halfway to being sanitised.

We indeed live in an enlightened world now thanks to the wheels of the marketing machines, and masculine pheromones will bring out the beast or forest in you in seconds. In fact used often enough and the opposite sex will be instantly drawn to its hypnotic effects, and instantly fall at your feet. Guys will play it down of course, but the kudos has been noted and body language signs of approval emitted ,or grunted.

Pretty, pretty delicate flowers, lavender fields and Hawaiian beaches waft from the bathrooms of many homes, and she as ascends floating on clouds of aluminum??...no wait ...she floats on a cloud of delicate sweet berries ( last cloud I saw dumped rain for 3 hours solid).!

So now we have beauty and the beast .......at least that's what the manufacturers want us to believe, in reality the majority of the fragrance is still on the ceiling of the bathroom,or busy staining our clothes and NOT destroying the stinky body odor like he said it would!

Now we all know there are girl (how cute) and boy deodorants ( they are manly) of course, and I didn't much like they way they were being marketed , grade them weak to strong ,but don't give them gender connotations , jeez there is something so immature about that. Anyway one of the marketing directors informed me that on authority and investigative research, (god ya gotta love that big important ,I know more than you kinda crap don't ya),that ,females dont perspire ( that's sweat,if your a horse) perspire ,if you're a human, and definitely girls. women, girl-ladies, do not sweat.....well ya would've blown me over with a feather with that amazing, researched , scientific fact !!...

Thanks To LadyLime

Its Official ,Ladies Dont Stink

Its official ladies , sorry I mean girls ( pass me a paper bag) dont stink!!, we apparently dont have that biological function....BUT if we do ( whoops , in case there are a few freaks out there), they are pretty smells, delicate, but pretty stinky smells.....

How-ever he sounded even sillier ,when I quizzed him about the new( clinically proven) ,no less deodorant, anti persperant for the woman who wait for it ...perspires more?....so if women dont perspire, and now do , where do they get the 'more' from.......marketing guru is not following me now ,and I am begining to sweat , ooops perspire , no make pretty smells. I end the call.

By the way the new clinically proven deodorant is 5x more expensive ,and thats what makes me angry and feel ripped off !!!!

Thats probably exactly what they were manufacturing 10 years ago and we knew it as real deodorant, because it did exactly as they claimed it was supposed to do!!! deodorise and at the price of regular deodorants on our shelves, which currently do very little except litter up our bathrooms cupboards

Natural Ingredients That Kill Body Odor!!

Fresh LIME or LEMON juice, one squeeze of fresh lime under the armpit, lasts all day ,wont stain your clothes ( like aluminium based commercial products do) and the cost is minimal.

Baking SODA (good ole baking soda to the rescue). Could there be a cheaper product on the market with so many versatile uses. Purchase a couple of shakers, with good sized holes, keep it near the shower. Shake out a small amount ,bout the size of a nickel onto damp hands or add a drop of water to make into a paste ,rub under arm-pits ,then rinse. Odor free!

DIAL or any ANTI-BACTERIAL SOAP plus, Dry-sol, prescription only, follow directions.

LIMES AND LEMONS  are perfect also as hair rinses ,penetrating and cleansing built up shampoos, conditioners and other hair products. Our hair does need some natural oils though , so I recommend you only rinse with natural fruit juice's once a week. The shine and delicate fragrance will be delightful. I am surprised that hair salons are not exploiting this simple and effective treatment ,calling it something like 'Citrus spa massage' ,then charging the price of 50 limes to do what you can do yourself ,with one......

I

July Is Lime Month !

Rows and Rows Of More Of The Same Except...

Dont Stink.. Think Zinc

ZINC  Take two 50 mg tablets twice daily for i week, then return to regukar deodorant or other methods above.

RUBBING ALCOHOL   Inexpensive and useful for other body treatments. Take a bunch of flat cotton pads ,the ones used to clean off make-up), place them in a tight fitting jar soaked in rubbing alcohol. Swipe one pad anytime you need to freshen up. The alcohol kills bateria.

DIET TIP~~~~>  Eat less refined sugar, bacteria loves to feed on the excess sugars in our sweat. less sugar =fewer bacteria=less Body Odor

Thankyou Nazishnasim, On the catwalk...On the Catwalk...

omg, i would have liked to c the marketing guru's face when u were asking him simple, direct questions..he must have been thoroughly baffled..i can imagine it in my mind...would b a good take in a film.

when I stink I always think that at least my body must be expelling waste.

I think u r onto something with the diet. they finally realize and utilize a dog's sense of smell to diagnose disease and disorders, albeit, not to their fullest potential as of yet. In most cases, I would think that it is the body alerting us. Try to get a rational explanation from a doctor trained in western medicine regarding this and u would probably get another interestingly humorous conversation for your movie. U could call it something like, Complicated Answers to Simple Questions or My How They Dance About Instead of Saying, " U know, I Am Uncertain".

I keep laughing thinking about it...it would be like crank calling just to see what supposed experts would say who were unwilling to exhibit ignorance...

peace...thanks for the funny image and the practical info

That's what is so frustrating with commericalism. The art has turned from the creation of the product to the image of the product. Build a cardboard box and make people think it is a house.

Eaglekiwi profile image

Eaglekiwi  says:

yes I agree Pete, its one thing to associate image ,innuendo ,emotion with a product , but to decieve or to make claims ,is quite another. I wonder who monitors such manufacturers? and by whose standards they are measured.

I wish consumers had a united body ,then they would improve their standard, Im sure.

Plus, you'r so right about the deodrants being ineffective ... now I know better where the 'pretty stink' comes from at work *sniff sniff .... "yup that's me"*.

How is it that you cannot find deodorant that works? I use Secret and Dove and they work really good. As long as it is antiperspirant, I think it would help. I have only had a problem with one deodorant that I have used. My best friend used to have this problem though. I guess it is just the persons chemistry or something maybe.

Eaglekiwi profile image

No well I never had a problem when I was living in New Zealand finding good reliable products . I think they are not as regulated here ( USA) and Ive found crappy ones....I might have to go back to Dove or make my own ,thankyou for your comments ...p.s I emailed a manufacturer too asking them ,so be good to hear back from them.

Yes, you should go back to Dove if it works, it is not worth buying a cheaper priced deodorant and having to use it five times a day. Besides, there are lots of companies scrimping on stuff now with the economy being the way it is.

Eaglekiwi profile image

Eaglekiwi  says:

yes and thats what annoys me annvans , they cut back on ingredients but NOT on price...limes are better probably in the long run ,since they print the list of chemicals so small anyway.....do you remember for example how popular sweeteners were until people found out about that one of the chemicals was a carcinogen and banned in some countries.?

The diet one intakes, truly makes a difference. I think the stinkiest are those eating all processed foods. Great points, with lemons. A good daily cleanse is, a tall glass of water with lemon, cayenne pepper, and a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar first thing in the morning. Should help with stinky people as well.

Eaglekiwi profile image

Eaglekiwi  says:

Hi Jodi ,great to see you and thankyou for making a comment. Diet is a major help although I confess I could always do better.

It is mainly because many of the regular brands here in the U.S are unknown to me( some I know) and so as I was advised to buy the 'girl' ones ,I guess I bought weak ones , but I dont think it should be marketed quite like that anyway lol.,which inspired me to email one of the manufacturers and well basically I suggested he make some new ones lol

The aluminum in their products gets absorbed (OMG) then sweat-ed out of your body. It makes you smell worse. This way they have you in a cycle of using their product. Anti Perspirants just clog your pores and are not healthy. Any natural remedyshould be given 7 to 10 days to find if it works as you need to sweat the aluminum out first. I have found the Chrystal deodorant to work great. Can be found in health food stores. It is basically just salts that prevent the (odor causing ) bacteria from forming.

Eaglekiwi profile image

Eaglekiwi  says:

Hi Paper Moon hey thanks for sharing your information. I am even more determined to quit buyin some of the commercial brands now. I dont have a B.O problem and definately wont be paying greedy fat cats to get one ,lol.do appreciate your input!.....the other thing too is Im definately in a higher humidity area now ,so a healthier product makes sense.

actually it tingles a bit ,ok I wont lie ,stings, so what I do now ( and not every single time) is cut up a lime or lemon ,keep in a seal proof container and squeeze a few drops onto a cotton ball n dap under armpits..dunno how it works but it really does , doesnt stain clothes and better than aluminium bein absorbed (my opinion)...hey hnics11 loved your comments ,thanks alot.

Wow! Limes and Lemons? Didn't know that! I use Degree. And yes, I don't get the idea of why we need 24-hour protection. Unless you're doing an activity for 24 hours. I say for men, as for ladies (who don't stink) just take a shower, wash your armpits, take a good trusted deodorant (that is antiperspirant) and that should do the job. If that didn't do it, well you have some problems.

Eaglekiwi profile image

lol and thanks Ron for making a comment .

I should really say cuz im sure everyone must think by now I have a serious B.O problem ,lol. (I dont) ..it was annoyance with large manufacturers who profilt ridiculous amounts with no or little accountability!

I also happen to love limes (and lemons)....just somethin about them that is natural , pure and available....

Hi DeBorrah , Thankyou for your comments and yes with limes (my fav) and lemons being cheap at farmers markets is a good time to experiment ,but like you I use a mix of commercial and when I have a little spare time ,I mix up a little batch ( enough for a few days)and store in an airtight container, with those eye-makeup remover pads (old instant coffee jar ) works fine.

Actually the citrus scent is great for keeping some bugs away too ,so double bonus lol.

I agree that ladies dont stink. Heard that some of these deodorants may be harmful as it does not allow the sweat glands to naturally get rid of toxins? Personally, I dont think there's anything wrong for a woman to not be too concerned about these deodorants.

Eaglekiwi profile image

Eaglekiwi  says:

Yes I just like to be aware of advertising and marketing tactics and its a good thing to try out natural things if we have the time and passion. For example they know females do the majority of shopping so target skincare (toiletries) as if we were idiots, and its good to keep them accountable , ie chemicals and junk etc. Thankyou for your comments!

I managed to get off the deodrant wagon about 2 years ago on a long holiday - seriously, if you can stop using anit-perspirants and deodrants for a couple of weeks you seem to stop sweating! I think it's because your body works extra hard to get rid of all the chemicals you pile onto it in your quest to not smell LOL!! It's true about diet and especially sugar, I have massively cut my sugar intake and use deodrant (not anti-perspirant) about twice a month and smell fresh as a daisy AND I do long(ish) distance running!! great hub BTW

What an interesting Hub here! I appreciate the very interesting comments on this. In very warm climates, the best and simple way to stay fresh is to shower frequently and change clothes. Since the issue is based on bacteria, I reckon a good anti-bacterial soap does the job, it reduces the chance of bacterial re-occurence and also makes you smell like a hospital ward! Lol! Deodorants seem to just mask a smell. How many times have I passes a guy who has probably sprayed a whole "Lynx" bottle on himself on the way to a night club or in the office first thing in the morning?

I see that some clothes manufacturers are now making socks that claim to have bactericides in them. Soon they'll be in most of our clothes. Why don't they just blast our new clothes with the most delicious smelling deo as we buy them, and be done with it?!!

Ladies, as far as deodorant goes I would highly recommend you stay away from antiperspirants. They keep you dry but have "zinc" in them and studies have shown that this may lead to cancer. The study showed that the reason men do not seem to get it is b/c they have hair under their arms and it blocks the zinc, or most of it, from being absorbed into the body. But for most woman, hair is not there (hope so at least), and the zinc easily gets absorbed and voila...breast cancer.

Cheeky girl , interesting and novel insight , I love it. There is nothing worse than body odour mixed with any kind of fragrance , dirty flash we used to nickname it , ewww.

Kinda like your attitude, my sons used to say , if we didnt wash (God forbid) then our bodies would naturally cleanse themselves....umm...yea right , but I do get where they are coming from. Too much aint good either.

Newyork really does make me wonder , so much crap ,pollutants in the air , in our food and on our bodies , its a no win situation huh.

Interesting point you make about the zinc too!

Thankyou for taking the time to read and add your information.
