Healthy Food for Baby

Making baby food is really much more simple than it sounds. A lot of new parents are turned off by making their own baby food because they think it will take too much time or may be more expensive than buying the prepared jars of food. In reality when you add up the costs of each method it is much less expensive. It really doesn't take too much time either, especially if you make it in large batches. One bag of organic frozen peas costs about $3.00 and will make at least 6 servings. For this cost you could only buy about 2 jars of organic baby food.

To prepare your own baby food choose the foods you want to make (according to your physicians specifications, of course). Be aware of foods such as spinach because it is recommended not to prepare this for baby at home until he is 9 months. This is because of the nitrates that are found in spinach and a very few other foods that can lead to "blue baby syndrome". (This condition is extremely rare. If you have concerns consult your physician).

After you have decided what to make, cook it according to the package instructions. After it has cooled simply put it in a food processor. ( I love my kidco baby food mill. We use it for things like dip and hummus now that baby has outgrown baby food). Add breastmilk, formula, or water to get the desired consistency. Now it is ready for baby to eat!

To store the baby food you have just made in indivual servings, simply pour into icecube trays, cover with saran wrap, label and date, and freeze! Most foods will keep for a couple of months and this is a very convenient method.
