Making Hubs Prettier Part 3: Faking CSS
67This is the third and last installment of my Making Hubs Prettier series. I might have mentioned earlier that Hubpages is very restricting because it does not allow html, however many of us , especially squidooers, are used to creating beautiful text using css and custom modules.
Isn't this kind of like your Header tutorial?
In a way. Headers are about introducing paragraphs, so it's about short and only slightly related text.
However this "tutorial" is actually more of guidelines on using pictures to fake css for large text blocks.
Rules aren't always meant to be broken - these sure aren't
1. Do not use a section of text that has a lot of keywords. Since text within pictures isn't crawled, it is better if you only use extra text - the ones that aren't necessary for your hub, but would stil make a nice addition.(Quotes, Quick tips, Excerpts)
2. Name all of your pictures well. Try to put in at least one keyword. After all, maybe the title will be enough for it to get some traffic via google images.
Making Flashy Text the Easy Way
- Use an image editor like photoshop, fireworks, of splashup(free)
- Write the whole text
- Pick a background color
- Adding in lines and borders (lines/rectangles)
- Add random pretty things
What are random pretty things? See below
Making Flashy Text the HTML way
If you like html, or if you're just plain used to it, simply
• do what you normally do - but on an external program like dreamweaver, scribefire, or even a combo of notepad/firefox.
• Screenshot
• Crop out only what you need.
• Upload..ta-dah!
Duplicate Content
Hubpages can take away hubscore if you use duplicate content. Well the wonderful thing about text pics is that they're not going to be considered duplicate content.
"But isn't duplicate content for spammers?"
Not always. If you're doing a music hub about a cool band and you're trying to include the lyrics to your favorite song, you wouldn't want to be penalized for duplicate content - after all the rest of the content could be extremely original and well-written.
So if instead you just put into a picture, and strip out the important words (or, in this example, your favorite line) you can have your duplicate and still do some SEO in the caption.
"But won't I look like a spammer?"
Of course not. Real spammers would rather risk hubscore than miss out on serious keywords.
JPG and PNG
Should I use JPG or PNG as an image file?
Both.
PNG is great because you can easily edit your picture later on. However that also means if someone downloads your pic, they can easily strip the text with a simple copy-paste.
JPG is great because all of the layers flatten, which means the only way to steal the content is to retype it. The best way is to make the pic in PNG, and then save it again but as a JPG - which will be the one you upload. This way you can also easily edit the picture simply by going in to edit the original PNG file.
Cons
- No text search results from the image (so pick your caption keywords carefully at least)
- You can't edit it directly on HP, you need an image editor (Photoshop, Fireworks, or Gimp)
- You have to consider that images take more time to load than text
Pros
- Image search results if you use a good keyword for the picture's title
- Better copyright protection
- Control over the text's color and size
- Control over any borders and background elements
- No duplicate content penalty
Can't decide on dimensions?
If you're using a photo module by itself, use a width of 520px.
If you're using a photo module that has been pushed right to the text, use 260px for the width.
For height just pick something large - like 1000 px. Then once you finish the picture simply crop the picture so that it doesn't include the extra space
