It may seem like it is tough to make money online during a recession and that would be true.  Any business would have difficulty when people and other businesses aren’t spending money.  But it is during those times of economic upheaval when many great businesses have been started such as Microsoft, Fed Ex, and General Electric to name a few.

So what is good about starting a business during a recession?  First of all, a recession forces any business to look at costs and keep them under control.  When starting out, it can be tempting during good times to overspend on prestigious office space or furnishings, the latest technology, or generous employee perks.  But in a recession, business founders are forced to look at each expenditure very closely.  When making money online, the same can be said.  Currently, my monthly costs are ZERO.  I am simply spending my time.  Once I develop a steady stream of income, then I can look at paying for my own domain, developing a site, or perhaps even outsourcing some of the effort.

Another good reason that now is the time to start making money online is that it is as tough as it can get.  Revenues have only one way to go, and that is UP!  I remember looking at some keyword CPC data from a few years back.  The numbers were 2-3 times what they are today.  When the economy starts to pick up and the demand for advertising increases, I will be there ready to sell space to those advertisers.  The articles will have already been written and optimized.  The websites will have traffic.  A lot of the foundation for growth will be laid down already.

Finally, a recession just simply makes a business owner persevere in the face of adversity and uncertainty.  If you can make it through the darkest days of the recession when things aren’t going well, then when they improve, it will be that much easier.  I want to be a survivor.  I want to be around when the economy improves and reap some of the harvest for all the hard work that I am doing right now.  I want to be there when the ad rates improve to double what they are now.  Now may actually be the best time to get started.  I have accepted the challenge to make money online despite all the difficulties.  Have you?
