Making Money with Twitter
Making Money with Twitter

I have been making money with Twitter over the past month, and it is so easy! There are several Twitter services that you can use, if you have a Twitter account. Basically, advertisers will pay you for "tweets" that you send out, on a per click, per lead, or per sale basis. Its free and earning the minimum payout does not take long if you actively use Twitter. If you are a business owner, you can run ads through Twitter services, too.

I've read several blog post comments on the idea of making money with Twitter. I was actually surprised by the assertions by some that they would "un-follow" people that put ads on their Twitter stream, or in their Twitter background.

Let's be honest. Most of the tweets you read concern people's own blog posts or promotion of their own websites. The best Twitterers are the ones that promote other people's posts by "re-tweeting," or simply by taking a story from Digg, Mixx or StumbleUpon and posting it in their stream. As I pointed out in Social Media Success With Twitter, you will not get (or keep) many followers if you simply spam with your own submissions. Be a friend and you'll get more friends.

So, back to the idea of using other platforms to earn money with Twitter. There are two main sources that are available to both publishers (the people Tweeting) and advertisers. Magpie and Twittad.

The application with which I've had the most success so far is Magpie. Earnings are tracked in Euros. Once you reach €50.00, simply provide your PayPal information to Magpie, and you get about $67 USD! I'm only €10.00 away from payout.

You set your own standards with Magpie. I decided to have the site contact me with suggested advertisements before running them through my Twitter account. That gives me the ability to approve or deny them. You also set how frequently you want ads to appear in your Twitter Stream (i.e., one every 5 tweets, or perhaps one every 50 tweets). Its up to you. Your account settings can be changed at anytime.

You may also promote Magpie with your own account information; any advertisers that sign up through your tweet will give you a big 30% commission for the entire first year advertisements are purchased through Magpie.

The advertising "tweets" appear automatically and are written in a style that appears to many people to just be another post in your stream. In a casual, conversational manner, the advertisement might say something like:

This is a great cost effective solution for anyone marketing pet products online,

with a link to the website.

The Reality of People Using Twitter to Make Money

How Magpie works
How Magpie works
Twittad
Twittad

TwittAd is a bit different than Magpie, but still is a way for publishers (that's probably you) to make money. Again, advertisers can also get the word out through your Twitter account, which helps drive their business as well. Even more exciting is that you can actually list your Twitter account for sale through TwittAd.

But I don't know what my profile is worth, you might say. No worries, TwittAd can help you there:

We have calculated your potential worth on Twitter to be
$ 151.16 from www.whatsyourtweetworth.com

If you don't want to sell your profile, let's get back to advertising. The way TwittAd works is that it looks at the number of your followers, the number of tweets you publish per day and then decides whether and what may be advertised on your Twitter background. You get 48 hours to accept or deny. Money is earned for every hour the promotion is displayed on your Twitter account. In addition:

Twittad´s newest feature allows you to search for available Advertiser campaigns based on what interests you. For example, if you are a small business owner on Twitter you can advertise a product that interests you, and get paid to do it!

TwittAd, like Magpie, is free. Just sign up and browse around to see what you think. You don't ever have to accept an advertisement. There's no downside.

Another way to earn money through Twitter is to sign up (again free) at Bukisa. The above video describes the process. I'll be honest and say that I haven't submitted any content yet, but it looks promising. Basically, you publish content, build a network and earn royalties when people view your pages. You only need to reach $10 in your account to request payout through PayPal. You can decide whether your submissions can be used by other people through Creative Commons, too.

The Twitter advantage is that you can add your Twitter account to your Bukisa account and automatic tweets will go out when you publish new content, comment, or rate others.

With my personal accounts, I stand to make about $75-100 a month using Twitter-related services, on top of Adsense earnings through HubPages and my personal blogs. The best part is that it takes little effort on your part.

What do you think? Do you want to earn money using Twitter? What do you think about those that do?

Funny, Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, said they have no interest in buying Twitter from a February CNBC interview.

Yes, I've heard conflicting reports too about a Google-Twitter deal. Fortunately, the news feed in the hub will update as things progress (or not)!

Great info Steph. I must admit, I have signed up with Twitter and have read all your hubs on it but still can't figure out how to use it properly. I know how to update my status, but other than that I'm not sure what else to do. It's one of my goals this holiday, to get my head around Twitter.

Thanks Cindyvine - Basic Twitter is just what you've described. Once you download one of the applications like Twhirl or Tweetdeck, you can really start interacting with re-tweets, etc. Have fun! Steph

Its super easy! The only thing I try to do is tweet around the ads so they are less obvious (but other friends have said they didn't even notice the Magpie ads).

Thanks for telling me about Magpie. I have already signed up with Twittad and it seems great. I just need to get some more followers so I can make more money with Twitter.

Hi Jim, you're right! I've noticed that the more followers, the more you can earn with Twitter. Magpie is really great. Twittad looks promising to me, too.

Good luck! Stephanie

Ugh. Sorry I hate Magpie. The reason is because under your name should be your tweets. It's confusing of identity when Magpie tweets as you. My two bits.

cindyvine: nothing to get the head around really. It is what it appears. You can just blast out 140 char updates about anything any time.

stephhicks68 profile image

stephhicks68  says:

@Tracker Frost - good luck!

@hot dorkage - I hear you. The thing I like about Magpie is your ability to approve the tweets ahead of time and also stop the ad camppaign if you don't like them. Its like a Twitter proxy. But your opinion is shared by many, indeed!

I think I'm lost on there... I'm under marisuewrites....help!

stephhicks68 profile image

stephhicks68  says:

Hi Marisue - you can make your own settings at Magpie (the number of tweets you want to send - you can set it to every other tweet, 1 per 5, 1 per 10 or more). The ads, once you approve them, will automatically appear in your tweets. You can always unapprove them when you want too! Good luck!

That's right, Twitter is a lot like Facebook. You can protect your updates so that no one can see them except followers (friends) if you want. You can also block individual followers if you like. As always, be aware of what you are saying! ;-)

I use Twitter a lot to promote my own hubs, blogs and sites but I am careful to re-tweet as much as possible and I am beginning to get to know some people - out of over 2000 that's not bad. I use TweetDeck to organise my work on there and I log on 3 or 4 times a day (to catch different time zones) for about 20 - 30 minutes each time. I have a document already prepared with my regular tweets icluding short urls so I save time that way. Each time I finish anew article I prepare a tweet - length piece and add it to the document so I can just copy-paste. I intersperse my tweets with rewteets and replies to DM's so that I'm not flooding people with all my stuff. traffic to my hubs, blogs and sites has definitely improved because of twitter. I'm already testing Magpie and have decided to controm the ads myself. Great Hub. hey I'm @js57

Coming to this late but grateful to have found it. Planning to sign up to Twitter to promote my own hubs/articles/blog and those of other hubbers/writers on the sites I write for/bloggers in my blogging group by tweeting and re-tweeting. Am I right in thinking Twitter is a good platform for this, Steph? Oh and one more question - are you saying you can choose the types of ads shown through Magpie and TwitAd. (eg I blog about Travel With Kids and write travel articles - Could I get ads from travel cos rather than just random ones?). Thanks Steph. Great hub.

stephhicks68 profile image

stephhicks68  says:

Hi Karen - thanks! Yes, I primarily use Twitter to promote my hubs and blog posts, and also those of my friends/followers - also, I use it for Digg.com. You are right that the ads that Magpie and TwitAd pick for you should match what you tweet about. So, if you are primarily posting on travel, you should get those kinds of ads. Of course, if you don't, you don't have to approve them. Best of luck to you! Twitter is my favorite social networking platform. :)
