When my daughter was growing up, she loved play dough. It was a great thing to do on a rainy day or a cold winter day. I found this recipe from a church cookbook. There was no author listed, but thanks whoever you are. I always felt better knowing what the ingredients were. Along with that, it was fun to make new colors and we would add food flavorings to give it a little scent. It is a fun project to do with the kids. I have a few different recipes. I hope you enjoy them.
RECIPE 1
Mix together 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 2 tsp. cream of tartar , mix well and set aside.
In a sauce pan mix together 1 cup of water, 1 TBSP. vegetable oil and food color of your choice, you can also add a drop of vanilla or other flavoring here to give it a scent. Stir the dry ingredients to the water mixture in the pan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for about 3 minutes until dough pulls away from the side of the pan. It can be a little hard to stir but stay with it, the results are worth it. Next you must knead the dough and for this I suggest putting on some rubber gloves as the dough is quite warm. Knead into a ball and let it cool.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO STORE IN A PLASTIC CONTAINER WITH A TIGHT LID
RECIPE 2 FOR THE MICROWAVE
Mix together 3 cups of flour, 1-1/2 cups of salt, 6 tsp. cream of tartar, 3 cups of water, 3 TBSP oil and food coloring of your choice.
After you mix the ingredients well, put in the microwave and cook on high for 4 minutes, stirring after each minute. Don't overcook.
Put on the table and knead and again I suggest rubber gloves as the dough will be quite warm. Play dough will thicken as you knead it for a couple of minutes until you like the consistency.
STORE IN A TIGHTLY COVERED PLASTIC
When the dough has been stored, you will notice a kind of white crust, but all you have to do is knead it each time. I am sure it is the salt. With all the toy recalls right now, this is a nice and inexpensive alternative to purchasing store bought doughs. It is summer and there are lots of rainy days coming so make lots and have fun with your kids.

It is fun and brings good memories. Thank you for stopping
Brings back many happy memories with my sons!!! I loved the smell of this homemade playdough, and knowing it was safe if they 'accidentally' ate it, made me feel all the better about making and playing with it!!! Thanks for the great hub and bringing back sweet memories!

Lol it is nasty tasting I know but at least when you make it yourself you know what you are tasting.

We used to do this when my daughter were young too. And we made sand candles, good-smelling soap and decoupage. Fun!
