Making money from forums
68Content is king
If you have read anything about making money online, you will have probably heard the phrase "content is king". Content can include text, images and videos.
The more content you have on your website, the more interesting your website will be and you will be able to keep visitors to keep coming back to your site.
You can also take advantage of "long tail searches". You may not rank for a competitive phrase, but it is not so difficult to rank for a three or four keyword phrase. You won't get much traffic from these searches, but if you put them all together they will amount to a decent amount of traffic.
User generated content
We are all limited by time and there is only so much content we can create on our own. You can pay people to write articles but this can get expensive.
By running a forum other people will create the content for you. People post discussions which other people then reply to. All of this content will get indexed by search engines and you will get traffic from this content.
Once you have traffic, it can be a fairly easy process then to monetize your website.
Forums build a community of loyal and dedicated users to your website. People love expressing their points of views on forums. They also like feeling part of a community.
Starting a forum
The most difficult thing about running a forum is actually starting one. If you have a website which already has traffic, it can be a little easier to start a new forum.
If you start a website from scratch you are in for some work to get started. The hardest part initially is getting people to sign up and start posting. The biggest turn off is seeing a forum with no posts and no members.
To start a forum you or your friends are going to have to create some posts yourself. It might seem strange but you have to start somewhere. There are services where you can pay people to post on your forum, but the quality of the posts can be dubious.
You might need to get a bit creative and run a competition for instance to get people to start signing up. Everyone loves to win something.
Moderators and spam
Initially you will need to monitor the forum as closely as possible. Your forum will be a target for spammers and people just looking to promote their website. You will need to act swiftly to remove such posts. Depending on the forum software there are a variety of ways to stop spammers in the first instance.
Eventually you might get an active participant who can act as a moderator. Most moderators on forums do it for free and the enjoyment of participating in a community. You will need to find someone who you can trust and who has the best interests in seeing the forum become successful.
Forum software
Most forum software is fairly easy to set up. You will need to know how to create a MYSQL database. Most hosts will be able to help you with this.
PHPbb is an open source application which you can use for free. It is one of most widely used forum applications on the web, which also makes it a target for hackers. You will need to keep it updated regularly.
VBulletin requires a license to run. A leased option is also available. Vbulletin could be described as the industry standard for forum applications. It is used on many large sites and I run it on my Australia Forum website. There are plenty of mods you can install on your forum to increase the functionality of your site and enjoyment for your community.
Vbulletin is a great for running a forum
